I love romantic comedy books – there’s just nothing more delightful than a good love story overlaid with great banter and lots of humor.
Especially as summer rolls around, this is REALLY the kind of book I gravitate toward!
Here are some of my favorites:
20 Favorite Romantic Comedy Books
Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella
Sophie Kinsella always comes up with the most ridiculous scenarios and then makes them so funny. I can’t help but to laugh my face off when I read her books. This is one of my favorite books of hers. Emma spills all of her secrets to a stranger she meets on a plane. But when that stranger becomes her new CEO at work, she realizes that he knows every embarrassing thing about her. How much worse could things get?
I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella
I have got to reread this book because I can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed so much during a book. Sophie Kinsella usually hits all my funny bones (except for Wedding Night which was so ridiculously bad I wanted to cry instead of laugh). This one is about a woman who loses her engagement ring and will do almost anything, including take over someone else’s phone, to get it back. (Full review here)
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
Hannah looks like a mild-mannered kindergarten teacher, but she is actually a private bodyguard who could probably kill you with your wristwatch. Her firm gets hired by Jack Stapleton, who is a massive movie star, and dealing with a stalker problem. He needs some protection while he goes home to visit his mom undergoing cancer treatments and Hannah gets put on the job. The lines get a little blurred when Jack wants her to pretend to be his girlfriend to keep his parents from worrying about him. What could possibly go wrong in this situation!? Katherine Center writes the most snappy, laugh out loud dialogue. This book is just so fun!
The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center
I love Katherine Center (her books have snagged Summer Reading Guide spots on multiple occasions) and I think this might be my new favorite of hers about a woman who gets hired to help rewrite a screenplay with her screenwriter idol. Will sparks fly? OF COURSE THEY WILL.
Beg, Borrow, or Steal by Sarah Adams
This one sucked me in and is by far my FAVORITE book of hers! It’s your classic rivals to lovers trope – but with some depth to it. I absolutely loved it! Although this is book #3 of the When in Rome series, all the books standalone with a few crossover characters. (I also have a 30 second book review of it here)
The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter
I loved this funny spy romantic comedy with a dose of action packed adventure. Zoe wakes up in Paris with zero memory, but when she is mistaken for her spy twin sister, there are a lot of people who want her dead. This one has dual narrators (there are two narrators on the audiobook, which was extra fun) and I just loved every second of this book. (I actually think her Christmas mystery romance is even better!)
Is She Really Going Out With Him? by Sophie Cousens
I knew where this was going from the first 30 pages but it was still a fun ride! It’s all about navigating the ups and downs of dating post divorce. And if you liked her book, The Good Part, you’ll love this one!
Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto
Sometimes you’re just in the mood for something totally off-the-wall and WOW did Dial A for Aunties deliver. I had read and loved Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by the same author a few years ago and I liked this one even MORE. Funny, unexpected, and a little bit romantic, it reminded me of Sophie Kinsella’s standalone novels in the best way (and, like Kinsella’s books, there is some swearing and a tiny bit of sex).
The One with the Kiss Cam by Cindy Steel
This book was just pure delight! Nora is on a disastrous first date at an NBA game. But when her date gets up to get concessions, the kiss cam hovers over her and the stranger sitting next to her…let’s just say it might just be love at first kiss!
Tangled Up in You by Christina Lauren
This one was so light and fluffy (it is a retelling of Disney’s Tangled) but it was just SO FUN and enjoyable and one of those books that I blew through in 2 days because it was just pure delight. Funny, romantic, and clever. I can’t ask for more!
The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer
This basically feels like a Jason Bourne movie in audiobooks form, with a female interrogation officer for one of the U.S. government agencies. She’s known as The Chemist because she uses chemical cocktails to get information out of her subjects, but now she’s less worried about her job and more worried about her life because the agency is now trying to kill her. This was just a FUN listen with lots of laugh-out-loud moments – say what you will about Stephenie Meyer, but she can write some SNAPPY dialogue. (Full review here)
Finlay Donovan is Killing it by Elle Cosimano
I received tons of recommendations for this book before I read it! It’s about a suburban mom who, while going through a messy divorce, is mistaken for a contract assassin. She’s not going to kill someone . . . . but the money would really help get her manipulative ex-husband off her back. Laugh-out-loud funny and a little zany! And I blew through the sequel, which was just as delightful!
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
I am SUCH a fan of this book about a computer security guy who starts reading the emails between two women who work at the newspaper after their emails get flagged by the filtering software and then falls in love with one of them despite the fact that she has no idea he even exists. (Full review here)
Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld
This is one of those books like Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow that is very divisive. Some people LOVE it and other people cannot stand it. I loved them both! Romantic Comedy is actually one of the few books I read TWICE – during a busy week last fall, I opened it to read my favorite scenes again and ended up re-reading the whole thing. I love this smart, thoughtful book about a writer for a SNL-type show and her relationship with the heartthrob musician who is the guest host.
The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary
I was drawn in by the premise of this book – two people who live in the same apartment, but have never met – but then I was drawn in by the characters, the story and the unexpected humor. Tiffy is coming off a bad breakup and needs a new place in a hurry and Leon only uses his apartment for sleeping during the day since he works a graveyard shift. As the two start leaving notes for each other (at first slightly snippy), they slowly come to like each other but. . . they’ve still never met.
Book Lovers by Emily Henry
Nora is a cutthroat literary agent in New York City. When her little sister Libby begs her for a girls’ trip to which Nora grudgingly agrees and they find themselves in the small town of Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. It isn’t the laid back trip she thinks it will be because she keeps running into the handsome, but unpleasant Charlie Lastra, a brooding book editor she knows from back in New York. Their repeated encounters go from unpleasant to something a little. . . more pleasant. (When I asked for recommendations of books with great banter, this was 100% the most recommend. Note that there are a couple of open door scenes, so skip this one if those aren’t for you!).
Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter
I haven’t enjoyed a teen romance this much since To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. I was utterly charmed by this story of high school senior Liz who loves romantic comedies and has a long-time rivalry with her neighbor and classmate Wes. But then Michael, the boy she loved since she was a little girl, moves back to town and it looks like Wes is her best chance to make her own movie ending come true. There was so much funny dialogue and I laughed out loud multiple times AND maybe cried a few tears.
My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
This is one of my most recommended reads. After I listened to the audio and couldn’t stop laughing while I was trying to run in my neighborhood. Don’t even bother with the physical book – just get the audio version and you can thank me later. It’s a re-telling of the story of Lady Jane Gray (who was queen of England for less than two weeks) and they take every sort of liberty you can imagine with this story, history be darned. I promise you will laugh your face off. (Full review here)
The Accidental Beauty Queen by Terri Wilson
Charlotte is a school librarian and happy to spend her life buried in a book. Her twin sister, though, has spent her life chasing beauty pageant crowns and now is competing for Miss American Treasure. Except, the night before the pageant begins, Ginny has a horrible allergic reaction and begs Charlotte to take her place until Ginny is well enough to step back in. But even though they look alike, Charlotte and Ginny are wildly different – is there any way they can pull off a con at this level? I read this last summer and blew through it in a day – it was just so so delightful. It’s also squeaky clean! (Full review here)
A Longtime (and at one point illegal) Crush by Janette Rallison
I’m a VERY long-time fan of Janette Rallison who writes the best banter and clean romance (both for teens and adults). This one about a girl who falls in love with her older brother’s hot friend is only about 100 pages, but to say I laughed and swooned my face off is an understatement! I love ALL of her books and many of them are on Kindle Unlimited!
