Tally Talks: Five 2nd Grade Books She Would Recommend

It’s very strange when your youngest child turns 8 and you realize that you are FAR away from the toddler or preschool years.

She’s now reading full-fledged chapter books and loves to read! (Thank you, Savvy Reading!)

It’s become a part-time job for me to keep her stocked with books because she blows through them so quickly now!

Here are some books for 2nd graders she’s enjoyed lately.

2nd grade books

Tally Talks: 2nd Grade Books

Once Upon a Tim

Once Upon a Tim by Stuart Gibbs
160 pages
This series has been a big hit for Tally – there are four books, each around 150 pages long, with lots of black and white illustrations which make perfect 2nd grade books. Tim is a peasant but he wants more from his life which is too bad because in the kingdom of Wyld, your only route to success is being born a prince. Fortunately (for Tim), a princess from a neighboring kingdom is kidnapped and knights are needed to head out on a quest to rescue her. (Star, who is 10, loves this series too!)

What Tally has to say: My favorite character is Belinda – she is Tim’s neighbor and she goes on the quest with him and they both pretend to be knights so they can be included. She is brave and daring.

Cloud Puppy

Cloud Puppy by Kelly Leigh Miller
160 pages
This is a darling graphic novel (there are currently 2 books in the series) about Cloud Puppy who is part puppy and part cloud. Cloud Puppy is a book lover and when her favorite author is coming to a convention, she and her best friend can’t wait to dress up and go. Except they both want to be the same character.

What Tally has to say: Oooh, I love these books. They have colorful pictures and I like Cloud Puppy because she flies on clouds to places. I wish I could fly on clouds!

Stella Batts

Stella Batts by Courtney Sheinmel
160 pages
This series is included on Amazon Kids+ (for the record, I never pay for Amazon Kids+ but we have it whenever it comes free with a new Kindle) and Tally spent a month or more reading this series during our daily Family Reading time as part of homeschool. Stella is a third grader who wants to be a writer and lives with her parents and sister and their family owns a candy store (childhood dream!).

What Tally has to say: I like that there is fudge named after her in her parents’ candy shop. It’s written as if Stella was writing the book which is fun. It made me want to be a writer too.

Lucy Lancaster

Lucy Lancaster by Willow Coven
128 pages
This is the companion series to the beloved Heidi Heckelbeck series (which my girls have loved!) and it follows Lucy Lancaster, Heidi Heckelbeck’s best friend, who, like her best friend, discovers she has some magical powers of her own! This series has black and white illustrations on nearly every page, plus nice big text! The perfect recipe for a good 2nd grade book!

What Tally has to say: I like this because things go wrong and then she makes new friends and things go right. And it’s also at a candy store!

Pizza and Taco

Pizza and Taco by Stephen Shaken
72 pages
This beginning graphic novel series is a quick easy read, along the lines of Narwhal and Jelly. These are great little reads for kids just getting their feet wet in the world of independent reading and they’re funny and full color. There are lots of books in this series and Tally is always delighted when a new one appears at the library!

What Tally has to say: Every chapter is a different story about Pizza and Taco instead of one long story through the whole book. I can read these books in about 10 minutes because it is a lot shorter than chapter books.
