Over the summer, I’ve been putting up a question box on Instagram most Sundays and then answering the questions that come in over the following week.
One question that has come up more than once is about my everyday makeup and skin care routine.
I am NOT a beauty junkie by any stretch of the imagination, but I DO wear makeup every single day.
Also, for the record, I have pretty easy skin. I don’t break out super easily or deal with a lot of skin issues (and I never have).
Anyway, with those disclaimers, here are the makeup and skincare products I use on a daily basis.
My Everyday Makeup and Skin Care Routine
I wash my face morning and evening with Murad Essential-C Cleanser. (By the way, I am militant about washing my face. I haven’t slept with my makeup on in probably two decades. The idea of not washing it off before going to bed makes my skin crawl. It would literally feel as awful to me as getting into bed with shoes on).
I use one of these makeup removing washcloths to get all my makeup off.
In the evenings, I put a few drops of HydroPeptide Moisture Reset Face Oil on (you guys, this stuff is stupidly expensive but I got it in my FabFitFun box this summer and . . . I’m considering buying another bottle. I swear, my skin has never looked better in my entire life).
I also put on a little Babe Lash serum on my eyelashes every other night (use the code JANSSEN for 20% off).
In the morning, I make up for the face oil by using the most basic drugstore face lotion.
When it comes to actual makeup, here’s what I use:
BB Cream
I have used Shine Cosmetic’s BB Cream for the last year and it’s really phenomenal. It goes on super smoothly (I use this brush) and hits that perfect combination of making your skin look amazing without looking or feeling like you’re wearing a bunch of foundation. I use the color Awaken. You can use code JANSSEN10 for 10% off.
Eyebrows
I use a spoolie brush to brush out my eyebrows (I have very thick, dark eyebrows so it’s really handy that I happen to live in an era where dark, thick eyebrows are a thing – I get the occasional message on Instagram telling me that my eyebrows look ridiculous and that the color doesn’t match my hair or coloring AT all. Sorry guys, this is their natural color – I’m sorry it offends you) and then touch up the edges with an angled brush and this powder.
Eye Shadow
I did not understand eye shadow AT all until Flekk Cosmetics. The palette comes with a little illustration on the inside of the cover that shows you exactly where each shadow is supposed to go on your eye and then has a coordinating brush set with the brushes numbered so you know which brush to use for which shadow on which part of your eye. Basically designed for people like me who have ZERO idea what they’re even doing. I use Flawless most days but also love Flirty when I want a little more pop and color. I use the dark brown from the Flawless palette as an eyeliner on both my top and bottom lids. Use the code JANSSEN for 20% off
Mascara
I’ve never found a mascara I just LOVE – I’d say my favorite currently is this drugstore one.
Lip balm
This Winky Lux Rainbow Balm came in my FabFitFun box and looks like clown makeup (it’s got blue and orange stripes in it) but goes on super nicely and I love it as a little finishing touch. Sometimes, if I’m feeling fancy, I’ll put a little bit of it on my cheeks too, but. . . this happens maybe once a month.
Setting Spray
I got this setting spray in my FabFitFun box (are you seeing a pattern here?) back in January and it’s excellent. For even more staying power, spray some on BEFORE you put your makeup on, let it dry for 30 seconds or so, and then apply your makeup and do a second round of spray to finish.
Also, because our house is 70 years old and doesn’t have an en-suite bathroom, I get ready in our bedroom, so I keep all my makeup in one of the smaller top drawers of our dresser. I have these organizers and I use these adhesive dots to keep them from moving around.
Any questions or things I missed? Happy to answer!

I use that face oil too, and they had it in the fff fall sale for $49! I’ve seen it in quite a few of their sales!
Any thoughts on the Babe Lash? Good results? Have you tried any similar products?
It’s the only lash serum I’ve ever used, so I can’t compare it, but I LOVE it. My eyelashes look the best they ever ever have – longer and thicker and more full. Highly recommend.
Do you use an eyelash curler? If so what kind? Your lashes look amazing!
I don’t!
I used to use falsies mascara as well and found that it began to flake when it got old and I would have to replace it more often than I liked. Someone recommended LoReal telescopic mascara. I’ve liked it better because it will last longer with less flaking. The wand is different than you are used to, bit if you give it a chance you may like it as I do. Not expensively priced either at about $8.00 a tube.
