Day in the Life: Fall 2020 edition
This was a weekday in October. I have a nanny that comes three mornings a week and this was obviously not one of those days (otherwise, it would have been a four hour block of me sitting in one spot, typing away on my computer. . . very thrilling). This is what the days when I don’t go to work look like.
6:30 a.m. My alarm goes off. I get out of bed and head to my office where I start the morning with a prayer and scripture study.
6:50 a.m. I post to Instagram, respond to some messages, and then work my way through my inbox.
7:15 a.m. Bart pops in to my office for a few minutes on his way out the door on a run.
7:25 a.m. Ani comes upstairs, complaining that her stomach hurts and she does NOT want to go to school. I set her up on the couch with a blanket and a podcast.
7:35 a.m. I get dressed in my workout clothes and head to the basement for a quick arms workout while I listen to The Woman in White.
8:05 a.m. I come upstairs and make Ani some breakfast while she gets dressed. I do Ella’s hair and make my bed.
8:20 a.m. I read Creepy Carrots and Creepy Pair of Underwear with the three little girls while Bart showers.
8:30 a.m. Bart is ready to take the girls to school. Ani is really resistant and moans that she doesn’t want to go. I help her put her sweatshirt on and walk her out the door where Bart convinces her to go.
8:35 a.m. I hop in the shower, get dressed, and do my hair and makeup.
8:50 a.m. I come out and find Bart reading to the two little girls. Tally asks for some Cream of Wheat for breakfast, so I start that along with my own breakfast.
9:00 a.m. Bart and I unload the dishwasher. Tally goes into hysterics because she’s decided she wants toast instead and she goes off to her room to cry. She’s not soothed by Bart going into talk to her and after a few minutes, I go in and hold her while she sobs hysterically (I’d be willing to bet one million dollars she’s just super hungry).
9:05 a.m. I finish making my breakfast and sit down at the table with Tally on my lap. She eventually consents to try a single bite of Cream of Wheat and then proceeds to eat two bowls of it.
9:25 a.m. Breakfast is done and the girls and I snuggle on the couch and read a big stack of picture books. In the middle, the window washers show up (hooray!) and get started washing all our window which need it in the worst possible way.
9:55 a.m. The reminder for Savvy Reading goes off – I set Star up at the computer for her 25 minute class. I do the dishes and then read two books with Tally. Then I get Tally dressed and we clean up her room, before we vacuum her room and my room.
10:25 a.m. Star is done with her Savvy class and Tally wants to read some more books. We read one book then move to the table and they watch an episode of Doc McStuffins while I do their hair. I post some stories to Instagram about my weekly book giveaway. We clean up the living room a little and then we read a few more books.
11:00 a.m. Time for some lunch before Star goes to kindergarten. I make them some toast, Greek yogurt with peach jam and some applesauce. They take it out on the back patio to eat and I pay the window washers who have just finished up. While they eat, I update this post.
11:25 a.m. Star goes to the bathroom, gets her shoes and backpack and we head out. After we drop her off, Tally and I go get the carwash and then vacuum out the car.
11:50 a.m. When we get home, I put away all the things I brought out of the car and open a few packages that arrived while we were out. I read a book to Tally and then Bart comes up for lunch.
12:15 p.m. We eat lunch together and Bart plays rhyming games with Tally while I call to schedule flu shots with the pediatrician’s office.
12:30 p.m. Bart does the dishes and Tally and I make some lemon energy balls for afternoon snack when the girls get home from school.
12:50 p.m. Tally goes to the living room to play with play-doh while I clean up and put the energy balls in the fridge.
1:00 p.m. I go into my room to try on some thredUP items that came. Tally comes in and asks if she can spray and wipe the rocking horse on our back patio. I set her up and finish going through the clothes.
1:15 p.m. Tally comes in and we work together to clean the inside of the windows (we should have had them do inside and outside). I pull out the vacuum to clean the window tracks. When I drop the blinds back down, the screws come out of the frame and the whole set of blinds comes crashing down (this is way reminiscent of a day in the life post a did a few years ago when the girls pulled the curtains down). Tally goes flying downstairs to inform Bart while I vacuum the dust and debris off the couch.
1:40 p.m. Bart comes up to survey the damage and makes a plan to reattach them that night. Tally and I head out to pick up the girls from school.
2:00 p.m. We’re all home, the girls put their things away and we have snack. I look through a few picture books on the couch for an upcoming book list.
2:30 p.m. Quiet time! I get on a conference call and when that wraps up, I do some Instagram stories for a sponsored campaign.
3:45 p.m. Bart comes up to my office and we chat for a few minutes until Alexa reminds us that Ani’s Savvy class is about to start. I set her up and then turn on ABCmouse for Star and Tally and get the meat for dinner defrosting. I read on the porch.
4:25 p.m. Savvy is done, we turn off ABCmouse and everyone gets their bikes and we head over to a nearby parking lot to ride around.
5:30 p.m. After lots of riding around, we head home, chat with our neighbors in their front yard for a bit and then go inside. Tally is melting down, so I turn on a podcast for her to listen to while the other girls play pretend school at the kitchen table while I make dinner.
6:15 p.m. Ani is doing her weekly Wonder Math class and Bart comes up and sets the table and unloads the dishwasher. I finish up dinner and we all sit down to eat together (taking a plate in to Ani to eat while she finishes up her class).
6:45 p.m. Dinner is done. The girls run out into the backyard to play while I make a loaf of chocolate banana bread and Bart does the dishes. Tally comes flying inside, announcing she REALLY has to go to the bathroom. 30 seconds later, she calls from the bathroom “I had a full accident!” Bart goes in and strips her down and pops her in the bathtub. I get her out a few minutes later and put her in pajamas.
7:10 p.m. Star and I sit down on the back porch together to do her nightly reading practice. Four pages in and the other girls have discovered three kittens in the backyard. They bring out a bowl of milk and are all just completely obsessed by these new friends. Reading is definitely put on the back burner.
7:30 p.m. While the girls are engaged with the kittens, I sit down to update this post and Bart gets his tools out to fix the blinds. I share some InstaStories.
8:15 p.m. Okay, time to shut this kitty party down. After a good hand wash by everyone, we head to the girls’ bedroom and have family scriptures and prayer. I read aloud to them and then tell them goodnight and take Tally to her room to tuck her into bed.
8:45 p.m. Bart and I enjoy some warm banana bread and he rinses out the pan and starts the dishwasher while I clean up a bit. Ella comes up to check on the kittens who have started bouncing around the screened-in porch. We send Ella to bed and shoo the cats away and shut the door so they can’t get back inside the porch. I update this post and do some planning for tomorrow morning so I can hit the ground running on a work day.
9:15 p.m. As usual, despite my grand plans of getting in bed at 9:30 and reading for an hour, I spend a solid 45 minutes looking at Instagram instead.
10:05 p.m. I brush my teeth, take off my makeup and get in bed with a book.
10:25 p.m. Bart comes up and gets ready for bed and we chat for a few minutes.
10:40 p.m. Lights out – good night!
