20+ Kids Breakfast Ideas

My post about lunch packing strategies went nuts during back-to-school season and the obvious follow-up question was. . . “What about breakfast ideas for busy school mornings?”

So I asked my very wise Instagram community and there were so many good suggestions!

Here are lots of easy or make-ahead breakfast ideas for kids on busy school mornings!

Breakfast Ideas for Kids

Make-ahead / freezer staples:

  • Breakfast burritos
  • Egg sandwiches (either on English muffins or croissants)
  • Pancakes (sheet pan pancakes, protein pancakes, cottage cheese pancakes)
  • Waffles
  • Egg bites or egg muffins
  • Crepes
  • Breakfast casserole
  • Breakfast crunch wraps (egg, bacon, cheese in a tortilla)
  • Muffins (banana muffins, protein muffins, etc)
  • Hard boiled eggs

Oats and overnight prep:

  • Overnight oats
  • Baked oatmeal
  • Chia seed pudding
  • Regular oatmeal (apple cinnamon, or brown sugar)
  • Banana-oat “cookies”

Protein shakes and smoothies

Eggs:

  • Scrambled eggs (with diced ham or sausages)
  • Eggs cooked in a mini waffle maker
  • Soft-boiled eggs with toast
  • Egg quesadillas

Yogurt-based:

Quick and Easy No-Prep options:

  • Cereal and milk
  • Toast with nut butter, jam, or Nutella – top with banana, chia seeds, or berries
  • Bagels and cream cheese
  • Kodiak cups
  • Eggs and toast
  • Toaster waffles

Two systems that help moms get breakfast on the table quickly:

  1. Make a weekly schedule. To quote my favorite author of The Lazy Genius “decide once”, instead of deciding daily. Pick one meal per weekday and repeat it – for example: Mondays – oatmeal, Tuesdays – bagel and fruit, Wednesdays – eggs and toast, Thursdays – pancakes or waffles, Fridays – smoothies. This keeps decision fatigue from setting in.
  2. Make-ahead on the weekend, freeze, and give kids a self-serve option. Many moms shared that they prep a few options on the weekend (from the above list), keep them in the fridge or freezer, and either let their kids be in charge of getting their own breakfast ready each morning, or it makes it a breeze for mom to make breakfast each day.
