How We Handle the “BIG” Gifts on Christmas Day

When I was growing up, there was some debate between my parents about how to handle the biggest gifts of Christmas.
My dad grew up running down the stairs on Christmas morning and seeing the biggest gift (a bike, for instance) unwrapped under the tree. He loved that experience!
My mom liked the opposite approach – she wanted EVERYTHING wrapped and most especially the biggest gift which she liked to work UP to on Christmas morning. For her, the idea of starting with a giant LEGO set and then working your way down to a calendar or a pack of underwear was underwhelming.
I remember one year that we did it my dad’s way – with unwrapped big gifts under the tree – and then I don’t think he ever won that argument again.
Instead, after that we almost always had some sort of treasure hunt to our last gift (I wrote a whole post about that here!).

In our family, we’ve stuck with my mom’s way – every gift is wrapped and we work our way up to the biggest gifts – and then we usually have a treasure hunt to the final biggest gift (a few years ago, it was a trampoline!).
I love finishing with a big impact present and I also like that this method because it doesn’t rely on size for impact.
For instance, if I were gifting our favorite tablet (which is on sale at Walmart right now!), it’s not a big item which means that leaving it unwrapped under the tree doesn’t give you a lot of bang for your buck (in the way that, say, a play kitchen would).
But a treasure hunt to that final gift (wrapped of course!) means there is a lot of buzz about that bigger ticket gift!
And Walmart has incredible prices on all the hottest gifts this year from the Ninja Creami (which is on my wishlist this year!) to LEGO sets to the Samsung Frame TV to Barbie and they’ll all ship right to your doorstep in time for the big day! You can shop on Walmart.com or on LTK!
I’d love to hear how you handle the big gifts on Christmas morning – are you team “first look” or “grand finale”?
