5 Books I’m Hoping to Read Aloud to My Kids This Year

Every year, I like to put together a list of books I’m hoping to read aloud to my girls.

I just looked at last year’s list and I didn’t read ONE SINGLE BOOK on that list to them. (You can see the books I DID read to them here).

So this year, my list is much smaller – I clearly like the ability to pivot, pick something up that catches my fancy and basically follow my mood.

And even then . . . I might still do whatever I want and not read any of these!

But it’s nice to have somewhere to start!

The 5 Children’s Read Alouds We Are Hoping to Read This Year

The Rat Prince

The Rat Prince by Bridget Hodder
I love a good fairy tale retelling and this Cinderella story (told in part from a rat’s point of view!) was recommended by a reader and has strong reviews. I hope it’s a winner for us!

Code Name Kingfisher

Code Name Kingfisher by Liz Kessler
One of my friends who is a huge reader said she and her boys (who are similar ages to my girls) absolutely loved this WWII book. And then I looked it up on Amazon and the reviews are sky high – a 4.9 with 50 reviews!

Which Witch

Which Witch? by Eva Ibbotson
I was planning to have this as our October/Halloween read aloud this past year, but then time slipped away and for the first time in several years we didn’t read a Halloween read aloud at all! The reviews on this one are excellent and it looks so fun and funny, which I love in a Halloween book (legit scary is NOT for me).

The Long Winter

The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder
This is kind of a freebie (hey, I’m setting myself up for success!) because we’ve been working our way through the Little House series since the fall. We’re currently reading On the Banks of Plum Creek and while I don’t know if we’ll read the WHOLE series together, I definitely want to revisit The Long Winter, especially if we can get to it while it is still winter here.

Ghost

Ghost by Jason Reynolds
I read this several years ago and this year it’s one of my Everyday Reading Book Club books. I’d love to read this aloud to my girls while we’re doing it for book club – I think they’d really enjoy it!

  1. It’s funny you mention the Long Winter. It’s been on our list forever, and we finally just read it! We all enjoyed it. It’s perfect for cozy winter days. Hope you get to read it, too!

  2. Our Friend
    Hedgehog: The Story of Us
(Book #1 in the Our Friend Hedgehog…
    by Lauren Castillo

I read one and two to my kindergarten class and we all thoroughly enjoyed both.

  3. I also read the Little House books as an adult. Shortly after that, I met William Anderson who has written many biographies about the Wilder family, the other people mentioned in the books, and also the locations of the stories.
His interest in the books began when his elementary teacher read from these books to the class each day. He convinced his family to vacation to the locations for the books, and that began his life of research. He published his first book (although it was a small paperback) when he was only 16, and has continued writing more books that also include many photographs during his career.
I encourage any of you to find his books, and get a glimpse into the background of these stories!!! They add another level of enrichment!!

  4. I read Ghost recently and booktalked it with my 7th graders. They listened to the audio sample and were really excited about it! I also listened to Patina, the second book in the series. So good!

  5. I love Eva Ibbotson’s books! Any of hers make for a great read aloud. I have read Which Witch more times than I can count. Definitely give it a try! Thanks for the great suggestions 😀
