Slow Dressing

I used to have this sense that I should be able to walk into my closet and get dressed in two minutes or less.

And also, I should be wearing every item I owned at least once every couple of weeks, or it didn’t belong in there.

I don’t believe that anymore.

Now, instead of trying to get dressed as quickly as possible and feeling unreasonably irate when it take me a couple of tries to get something I’m happy with, I’m trying to embrace it as a puzzle to solve. And if I only wear something a couple of times a year, but it’s PERFECT those couple of times a year, well, that’s okay then.

I also feel like I’m getting simultaneously more adventurous in my dressing and also a better sense of what I like.

And I finally finally feel like I’m starting to get some sort of handle on the whole “texture” aspect of dressing myself. (Not only is this sweatshirt quilted, it also has nifty gold zippers up the side that you can’t see, thanks to my vest).

  1. I am one of those people who hangs on to clothing for years, and then am thrilled when I have the perfect thing to pair it with. I can do this because a) I have extra closet space and clothes-hoarding space and b) I haven't moved in 7.5 years….so decisions don't *have* to be made for practical reasons. I fear when I do move (it's bound to happen sooner or later) many many decisions will need to be made…some even–gulp–in the shoe department.

  2. Love this.. And I agree. Some things don't HAVE to match with 3.5 other things in my closet in order to be useful. And for the record I'm loving your style evolution 🙂

  3. Thank you for your honesty. This is just what I needed to hear today. Over the course of the year I've learned a lot about my personal style via Pinterest and style blogs, and while there are benefits to having a remixable capsule wardrobe, it is fun having some random pieces to play with…I mean, we're girls and some of us still like playing dress up!

  4. That sweater is pretty awesome. Okay, confession time – I used to be so trendy and cool in high school and I don't know what happened?!?!?! I feel like I can't dress myself anymore! I stand in front of my clothes in the closet every morning and just stare. Then I pick out the most boring, plain outfit you could ever think of. What's wrong with me!?
By the way, Merry Christmas! =]

  5. I love this blog post! Exactly what I have been thinking lately. Glad I'm not the only one. Can I ask what size you got this sweatshirt in? I have never ordered from them before but I heard their sizes can be on the small side. But I NEED this sweatshirt. 🙂
