Book Deals for a Wintery January Weekend

Happy Saturday!

This has been a FRIGID week and I’m glad the temperatures are warming up a bit!

We’re headed to a concert with Bart’s parents plus have some fun plans with friends and I’m VERY much looking forward to the Caldecott and Newbery announcements (along with the other awards!) on Monday!

In the meantime, here are some of the best book deals going on this weekend. Note that Chirp is having a big audiobook sale for a few days with LOTS of great titles to choose from – I’ve share some of my favorites below but you can see the whole sale section here

fire

Fire (Graceling Book 2) by Kristin Cashore
I don’t gravitate strongly toward fantasy, but this is one of my all-time favorites that I’ve read multiple times (including listening – it’s SO GOOD). In this one, Fire is the last human monster left in the land. She can read minds and control other humans, convincing them to do or say whatever she wants them to and, as you can imagine, the king of the land is highly interested in her powers as he struggles to keep his kingdom together (which was just about ruined by Fire’s monster father who was the former king’s advisor). There’s war and political turmoil and romance and beautiful-but-not-boring writing. Basically, this book is gold. (Full review here – the companion book, Graceling, is also terrific).

the two lives of lydia bird

The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver
I was NOT a big fan of One Day in December, but when I got a copy of her new book in the mail, I couldn’t help myself. And this one, about a woman who loses her fiancé in a car accident and finds that she can visit an alternate life in her dreams where he didn’t die, is much better (although a little bit sad).

all we were promised book

All We Were Promised by Ashton Lattimore
It’s 1837 in pre-Civil War Pennsylvania, and three young Black women are caught up in the uncertainty of the time. Nell, is a socialite trying to help the abolitionist movement with her wealth and status. Charlotte has escaped from a southern plantation and works as a housemaid (but she is keeping a big secret). And Evie is still enslaved, brought to Philadelphia under a loophole that means even in a free state, she’s not free. As their lives intersect, the three work together to free Nell without destroying the precarious freedom of the other two.

nature of fragile things

The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner
Susan Meissner is always one of the most highly recommended historical fiction writers when I am needing recommendations. I really enjoyed this one about three women during the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. (Full review here)

stolen focus book

Stolen Focus by Johann Hari
I was absolutely blown away after reading this one and couldn’t stop talking about it to anyone who would listen. This non-fiction book explores the ways that we are losing our ability to focus, both as adults and as children. And in turn, that affects how we act, make  decisions, interact with others and so much more. It gives some advice on how to reclaim your focus and attention and I loved every minute of it!

jo & laurie

Jo & Laurie by Margaret Stohl & Melissa de la Cruz
This is a TERRIFIC Little Women retelling that I blew through in about 2 days and then included on the 2021 Summer Reading Guide. It takes place after Jo March publishes her first novel about her and her sisters. Now her fans are clamoring not only for a sequel (as is her publisher) but they all would VERY much like their new favorite heroine to end up with the charming boy next door. And in her real life, Jo is dealing with that boy next door who would also like nothing more. Even worse, Jo might also want to end up with Laurie. But will she be too stubborn to let it happen?

prairie lotus book

Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
I read this to the girls and it was terrific. I already knew and loved Linda Sue Park from her Newbery winner, A Single Shard, and this one didn’t disappoint. If you’re a Little House on the Prairie fan, this has similar vibes, but from a totally different point of view.

the ivies

The Ivies by Alexa Donne
I was SO INTO this book in the fall and couldn’t wait to see how it all played out. At an elite prep school, a group of girls known as The Ivies each decide on their chosen Ivy League school that they’ll apply to so as not to hurt the chances of the other girls getting into their dream school. But when someone gets into the Ivy that they were NOT supposed to apply for, someone ends up dead. And everyone is a suspect.

Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
This one has won several awards – more notably a Newberry Honors and the Odyssey Audiobook Honor Award. After their mother goes to prison, ten-year-old Della and her older sister Suki are taken in my their mother’s boyfriend. Della has always relied on her older sister, Suki, to protect her through their chaotic and painful life. But when Suki tries to take her own life, Della realizes she may have stayed silent about the wrong things. Now, she must find her voice to uncover the truth and protect the sister who has always protected her. (*This middle grade book does include survival and healing from child sexual abuse.)

i must betray you book

I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys
This historical fiction title was a definite win in my book. It’s set in Romania in 1989 and while most European communist regimes are falling apart, Romania is still deep in the throes of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s dictatorship, with most of the world completely unaware. Cristian is 17 years old and dreams of a different life for himself, but when he’s blackmailed into becoming an informer, it looks like all his dreams might go up in smoke unless he’s willing to risk absolutely everything. This one is phenomenal on audio!

hidden valley road

Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker
After reading Empire of Pain for 2023 Everyday Reading Book Club, someone suggested this to me as another compelling narrative non-fiction read and when I read the description, I was very intrigued – a family with 6 of their 12 children being diagnosed with schizophrenia, and the researchers investigating the genetic origins.
