Summer Book Deals for June

We’re starting to get in a good summer groove and I’m writing this with the sun pouring through my office window, which is a nice change from the rainy overcast days we’ve had this week (we kept having to cancel our swimming plans with friends!).

Crossing my fingers that this weekend stays that way – we have some fun Father’s Day plans and some sunshine would make them all the better!

Here are some great book deals going on this weekend!

Summer Book Deals for June

Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don’t Know by Malcolm Gladwell – ebook
I flew through this – it was definitely an engaging and thought-provoking read. Just a forewarning this one is a bit more explicit than his other books, because of the examples he chose to illustrate some of his points.

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls – ebook
Ani begged me to read this one again (I read it about three years ago to them) and it was just as good as it always was. Naturally, I cried my eyes out at the end. (Let’s be honest. . . I was crying my eyes out by the end of the first chapter).

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness – ebook
This one is a delightful romp through history, libraries, and magical books. The heroine is Diana Bishop, a young scholar who also happens to be descended from a line of witches. In the course of her research, she accidentally discovers a long-lost (and magical) manuscript that summons a fantastical underworld she finds herself navigating alongside a vampire.

Mr. Putter & Tabby Bake the Cake by Cynthia RylantMr. Putter & Tabby Bake the Cake: Book #3 by Cynthia Rylant – audiobook
This easy reader chapter book series is a hit with so many preschoolers and early elementary schoolers – in this edition, Mr. Putter is excited about Christmas, and it is only July! He begins thinking about presents to give his friends and thinks a cake might be the perfect gift – except that he has never made one before. Lots of the books in this series are on sale for under $2 and can be made into Yoto cards!

Barkus by Patricia MacLachlanBarkus by Patricia MacLachlan – audiobook
If your favorite uncle came to visit and brought you a large dog as a surprise, you’d probably be THRILLED! (Your parents? Not so thrilled). Nicky and Barkus have all sorts of adventures together and I’m crossing my fingers for more books in this series.

The Gift of Failure by Jessica LaheyThe Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed by Jessica Lahey – audiobook
It took me forever to open this parenting book, but once I started, I couldn’t stop talking about this. Seriously a great parenting book with lots of great discussion of helping your child develop a growth mindset and how to stop over-parenting.

How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare by Ken Ludwig – ebook
I first heard about this fun book from Modern Mrs. Darcy all the way back in 2014. It’s basically a how-to book on teaching the classic works of Shakespeare to your children with fun methods created by an acclaimed playwright.

Book cover for The Terrible Two’s Last Laugh by Jory John & Mac BarnettThe Terrible Two’s Last Laugh by Jory John & Mac Barnett – audiobook
My girls LOVE this hilarious series about two boys trying to out-prank each other. This is the final book in the four-part series and just as hilarious as the first!

Book cover for Heart and Soul by Kadir NelsonHeart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans by Kadir Nelson – audiobook
This book offers a beautiful introduction to African-American history, starting at Revolutionary-era slavery and ending with the election of President Obama.
