This has been a GREAT summer of reading for Ani – she told me the other day, “I spent 3 hours reading this afternoon!” and frankly, I’m a little envious of all that reading time!
She just finished sixth grade and will be going into seventh grade this fall.
Here are some of the books she’s enjoyed recently:
Ani Approved: Books for 6th Grade Reading
Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater 160 pages
I’d read this one as a child, but couldn’t remember a thing about it except that he gets a penguin in the mail. Now I’ve read it multiple times to my girls and it was so fun to watch the story play out when none of us knew how it was going to turn out.
What Ani has to say: I read Mr. Popper’s Penguins right after reading two pretty serious historical fiction books and I just wanted someting fun and not so intense. This book was so funny and light hearted and I read it in just a few days. It was very unique and I just thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Scourge by Jennifer A. Nielsen
368 pages
We are huge fans of Jennifer Nielsen at our house, one of our favorites is her book The False Prince. She also does great historical fiction (which Ani also loves!). But in this non-magical fantasy adventure, Ani Mells is sent to a quarantine island after testing positive for a deadly plague, she and her best friend uncover dark secrets about the illness…and the truth that could change everything.
What Ani has to say: I listened to The Scourge on Audible and was so invested in it that I listened to it in one day. It gave me great satisfaction to figure out who the bad guy was and what was actually going on before the main characters (something I’m usually horrible at!) and I was just so pleased with the entire book.
Half Magic by Edward Eager
224 pages
This was one of my favorite books growing up and I read it many times. I’d actually read it to my girls years ago but only Ella really remembered it and after a couple of not-quite hits, it felt so good to read something I knew I would love. We read it again together just this last year and everyone enjoyed it! I think about this book ALL the time, even after all these years.
What Ani has to say: My mom read this book to us not super long ago but I could hardly remember it at all and though it would be fun to read again. I enjoyed it as much or more the second time through. It was so clever and entertaining, letting you see into the minds of the four children and being able to go on their adventures with them. I read the whole book in two days.
The 47 People You’ll Meet in Middle School by Kristin Mahoney
304 pages
I think the premise of this book is so sweet, especially as girls enter the wild world of middle school. It’s told through a letter from a big sister to her younger sister and shares an honest, funny glimpse into the years ahead – from mysterious new classmates to figuring out who you are. It’s the perfect read for anyone feeling nervous (or curious) about what’s ahead in sixth grade.
What Ani has to say: This book was written in a way I don’t think I’ve ever seen before and was so fun especially because I’m going into middle school next year. The entire story is so sweet with her sister, her friends, her parents, and it just has a great feeling.
