What My Kids Make Themselves for Breakfast

A few months ago, I shared a post on Instagram about the ways we help foster independence for our kids.

One of the things I mentioned was that – starting when they’re around 5 or 6 – they make their own breakfasts.

That post triggered a flood of comments asking “but what do they make themselves for breakfast?”

Here are some of the go-to breakfasts at our house that they can make themselves!

Breakfast for Kids

  • Yogurt and granola with fruit. I usually buy big tubs of plain Greek yogurt and they’ll add homemade granola and then any fruit, nuts, and other toppings we have on hand.
  • Cold cereal. Literally couldn’t be easier! Favorites at our house include Chex, Life, Raisin Bran, Special K and Cheerios.
  • Scrambled eggs. We have this tiny pan which is perfect for frying 1 egg or scrambling 1-2 eggs.
  • Toast. My kids eat a LOT of toast. Sometimes it’s solo and sometimes it is with some eggs or fruit or a smoothie.
  • Smoothie. This is a beyond the scope of what your average 5 year old can make, but as my kids have gotten older, they do a lot of smoothies.
  • Hard boiled eggs. It’s especially nice to make several at time so they’re ready to go at breakfast time for the next few days!
  • Oatmeal. Sometimes they use the little packets and sometimes they just do old-fashioned oats in the microwave and then add sugar and fruit. (They also like cream of wheat!)
  • Muffins. Sometimes I make a batch of muffins and freeze them for easy breakfasts (this is my #1 favorite muffin recipe!) and now my kids often make them themselves!
  • Chicken sausage. Our whole family is hooked on the chicken sausage from Costco and this is a very common breakfast at our house!
  • Orgain Protein shakes. When my kids are headed out the door early to sports practices or school, these are a lifesaver when they need something QUICK.

I’d love to hear what your kids eat for breakfast and what they can make for themselves!

  1. Around what age did your kids start making hot breakfasts for themselves, either using the microwave or stovetop? I’d love to help my 4.5 year old get more independent but he really loves a hot breakfast and I’m not sure how soon I’d trust him with hot food without a parent around to test it. (Definitely not at his current age)
