Our Harry Potter Family Halloween Costumes

Every year, when I see people on Instagram saying, “We don’t do family costumes because I let my kids choose what they want to be for Halloween.”

And I always laugh a little to myself because I am definitely not the one pushing family Halloween costumes at our house.

In fact, every single year, Bart and I say, “Wouldn’t it be easier to just have everyone do their own costume and not worry about a theme?”

And every year, the girls are absolutely insistent that we do a family costume even if it takes one million years for them to all agree on something.

Frankly, Bart and I would both be thrilled to not dress up for Halloween – neither of us are big into costumes or dressing up and we literally only do it because it’s such a big deal to our kids. Left to my own devices, I’d be wearing a somewhat festive sweatshirt and a pair of jeans on Halloween.

A naturally fun person I am not.

Anyway, with that out of the way, this year the consensus was Hogwarts staff and everyone chose what Hogwarts professor they wanted to be.

Tally chose Madam Hooch but when her costume came and she saw the wig, she refused to even put it on (she’s my child most sensitive to embarrassment and has been since she was tiny). So we quickly pivoted to Hogwarts’ staff AND the teacher’s pet and turned her costume into Hermione.

Halloween costume crisis averted.

And everything turned out really fun – it’s always fun to see things go from the planning stage and actually come to life.
