One of the delights of my reading life is going back to read classics I missed growing up.
One of those classics?
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
I’d heard about it my whole life, but never read it and then when I was working as a school librarian in Massachusetts and had a long commute, I picked up the audiobook on CD at my library (this was a long time ago!) and listened to it.
And I LOVED it. I definitely lived up to the hype! (You can see my review here).
If you loved A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, here are some other readalikes you might enjoy!

MORE BOOKS TO READ IF YOU LIKED A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
My mom read this book more than a decade ago and then passed it along to me – it’s not my normal fare but I loved it!

All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor
Follow along on the daily adventures of a Jewish family with five girls living in New York City during the early 20th century. This heart-warming book shows the joys and struggles of this close family. I loved this series SO MUCH as a child and I’ve loved sharing it with my kids.

Emily of New Moon by L. M. Montgomery
This is by the same author as Anne of Green Gables and I loved this trilogy as a young reader even MORE than Anne. When Emily’s beloved father dies, she’s sent to live with her two aunts and a cousin and life looks pretty bleak, so she finds refuge in her beloved journals.
The Chosen by Chaim Potok
My mom suggested I read this when I was trying to pick a book off a list my sophomore year in high school and I was mega dubious. And then I LOVED it. I think I need to read this book about families, faith and friendship again.

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery

Wolf Hollow by Lauren Holk
This one is set in World War II, with the focus on Annabelle who lives in a small town in Pennsylvania. The audio version of Wolf Hollow is terrific, and listening to it was a completely immersive experience – I felt like I was right there in the hills of Pennsylvania, wondering who was at fault and who to trust. I listened to the whole thing in two days – it was SO good. (Full review here)

Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Lovelace
This series is just so sweet and follows these girls from the time they are young until they reach adulthood. Super delightful and old-fashioned.
