Where You Can Get A Non Resident Library Card
There’s nothing worse than a lousy library. Your library might have a tiny budget or never buy the books you really want to check out or the hold lines on Libby are fifty years long.
Good news!
There are lots of places to get library cards for non-residents (even better, many of them are free non-resident library cards!).
But even if they aren’t free non-resident library cards, it may be worth $50-100 a year for you to have access to the library catalog of a much bigger collection.

FYI – Ohio libraries are funded by the state (well, at least they are for now, in early 2025, but state funding is getting shaky), so any Ohio resident is eligible for a free library card from any Ohio library. Most major library systems in the state have “digital only” options that give you access to libby, etc without a physical card. Most small library systems are all part of the “Ohio Digital Library” in Libby, so racking up small library systems may not be that helpful. I am just north of Cincinnati, and I have our local library (part of the Ohio Digital Library system), plus a physical card for the Cincinnati system (just a few miles away) and digital cards for: Toledo, Cleveland, Dayton, Akron and Columbus. It’s really awesome our state does this!
The Nashville Library only allows cards for specific counties; every other county in the state does not fall into its service area.

the purchased card owner, living at the same address as the card owner, are each
entitled to a library card. Exceptions to this policy may be made by the director of
the library if upon review of the application in question the director can justify the
exception in accordance with the general intent of the total Public Services Policy”
Thank you for this list! I currently live overseas, and it’s hard to get ebooks in English here. As an Ohio resident, I can confirm you can get a card from the Columbus branch online. You don’t even need a phone number!
