What I Wore in Australia

For our Australia trip, we each took a carry-on suitcase. Generally for bigger international trips, we’ve checked luggage, but since we were going to moving to three different cities and taking a bunch of in-country flights, we didn’t want to keep paying to check our luggage over and over again.

So carry-on it was (we have these carry-on suitcases).

I knew the weather would be nice (all the forecasts were in the seventies and eighties) so I wasn’t trying to pack any boots or sweaters or coats – I took all summery clothes plus two sweatshirts.

The most worn item I packed were my Nike Killshot sneakers. I took two pairs of sneakers (my beloved Eccos and the Nike Killshots) and I wore the Nike’s 95% of the time – I definitely could have skipped bringing the Eccos. They handled the miles of walking a day with zero issues, although I wouldn’t bring these as a brand-new shoe on a big walking trip. My Eccos were great out of the box, but the Nike’s required a little more break-in time. These are the no-show socks I wear with all my sneakers.

I also brought two pairs of sandals and I did NOT need my Reefs. The only other item I brought and didn’t wear was a casual black dress (this one, if you’re curious). I love this dress, but just didn’t need it on this trip – it never quite fit what I wanted to wear.

We had laundry access in two of our three stays, so I washed and rewore a lot of items (and I re-wore items even unwashed too!).

I took one pair of Tommy John pajamas (my all-time favorite pajamas) and wore them every single night the whole trip (and washed them twice).

I brought a single set of workout clothes (a tank, a sports bra, and a pair of shorts) and I worked out 2-3 times while we were gone.

I also used this belt bag every single day – I love it because I can fit my wallet, phone, phone charger, and Kindle, plus some chapstick. It’s completely sold out now, and I just ordered this bag – Ella had one and I loved it so much I got myself one too and it’s the perfect size for travel days (and, most importantly, fits my Kindle).

I wore this Hey June necklace every day of the trip (my code is JANSSEN), plus these this bracelet (which I wear 24/7 and never take off) and wore this pair of earrings every single day.

And I brought this pair of sunglasses which are my most worn pair at home and I wore them every day on our trip to Australia.

All of these outfits felt just right to me – I never felt like I looked like I was trying too hard or overdressed but I never felt embarrassingly underdressed either. And all of these are outfits I would or have worn at home, so I always felt comfortably like ME, which is always my goal when I travel!

Day 1: Travel Day

I wanted something that would look polished but also comfortable for a 14+ hour flight and this outfit was great. I LOVE these Anthropologie pants for the perfect mix of style and comfort.

  1. I LOVE this post! And all your travel posts.
I am so, so impressed with everything you got in your suitcase…you had a lot of variety!!!
I feel like I try to carry on and always struggle to get variety packed in a carry on or maybe I overpack the wrong things…I don’t even know!
Would you consider doing a post and/or instagram video about how you decide what to bring AND how you get it all in your suitcase. (I mean 4 pairs of shoes…how did you do it??!?!?!??)
I would also love to hear your methadology behind what else you bring – games, any snacks?, would love to hear how you do all this!

    1. I did pack one pair of shoes in my daughter’s not-too-full carry on! And I wore one pair of shoes on the plane, so I was only packing 2 pairs in my suitcase!

And I’ll have a whole post about packing coming later this week – stay tuned!
