4 Books I’m Currently Reading (August 2024)
We’re two weeks into school now and starting to get into a good routine.
One of my favorite things is that we do daily family reading time at the end of our school day. It acts as a nice bookend to our routine (pun totally intended!) and it means I actually sit down and read for 30 minutes in the middle of the day, which I intended to do last year when all my kids were in full-day school for the first time and did zero times.
(In fact, this reading was one of my goals for this school year – you can see that whole post here, if you’re curious – and it’s been so fun to make it happen).
Here are 4 books I’m reading right now:
Tangled Up in You by Christina Lauren
This is the newest book in the Meant to Be series (retellings of Disney fairy tales by popular romance authors – I’ve only read By the Book and it was so cute) and it’s based on Tangled, which happens to be one of my VERY favorite Disney movies. So far, this version is a DELIGHT. Ren has lived off the grid with her parents her entire life but when she’s 22 she applies to college (she’s never been to school before) and gets a full-ride scholarship to attend. It is a SERIOUS culture shock to her but nothing is more shocking than her attraction to Fitz, a college senior who is focused on graduating and getting his criminal record expunged. And when she discovers a secret about her life, he might be the person to help her get answers.
The PLAN: Manage Your Time Like a Lazy Genius by Kendra Adachi
I love a good time management book (I have a whole list of favorites here!) and there was NO WAY I was going too pass up The Lazy Genius version of a time management book, especially when it is designed specifically for women. This comes out in October and I can’t wait for it to be out in the world!
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
This was (one of) my Book of the Month books for August and I was sucked immediately in. It’s the story of a woman who arrives at a fancy hotel as the only occupant who is not there for a wedding. She quickly clicks with the bride and they start sharing their stories with each other which is a surprise to both of them.
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
Everyone has been RAVING about this book and I can’t resist the buzz. Plus, the story feels like the perfect finale to my summer reading – this one is about a summer camp in 1975 where a camper goes missing. And she’s not just any camper. She’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer cam p and even worse, her older brother disappeared with a trace 14 years earlier.
ANALESE
Funny Story by Emily Henry
I’m a big Emily Henry fan and have been really excited about this new release! The audio version became available for me a couple of days ago and I have been listening any second I can and I’m loving it! Daphne is engaged to Peter and SO ready to marry him in his hometown she moved to for him. Petra is Peter’s beautiful childhood best friend who is in a long term relationship with Miles. It all comes crashing down when Petra confesses her love for Peter and he for her. And that leaves Daphne stranded in a new city with no friends and no place to live…until Miles offers up Petra’s bedroom. Full of banter and love – this one is good!
JENNIFER
A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon
I love historical fiction and if I had to pick a favorite era, it would be a pretty close tie between World War II and the Revolutionary War. This book is set during the latter and is about a girl named Deborah Samson. She disguises herself as a young man and enlists in the Continental Army. Throughout her journey, Deborah, under the alias Rob, grapples with the challenges of maintaining her disguise while proving herself to her fellow soldiers.
KELSEY
The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center
This was on the 2024 Summer Reading Guide and I used one of my Audible credits to purchase it as a pre-release. When her screenwriting idol begins writing a romantic comedy, AND she gets invited to fly out and help write it with him, Emma Wheeler is on cloud nine! But you can’t have a romantic comedy without a little real romance…right? I blew through this in two days while working on a yard project and highly recommend the audio!
KRISTIN
The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow
I don’t always reach for Jane Austen retellings but this one was a delight. It tells Mary’s story, beginning during the events of Pride and Prejudice and carrying on into later years. Her character was complex and interesting and I found myself relating to and rooting for her to find her own happy ending.
My brother-in-law is the literary agent for Liz Moore (God of the Woods) so I’ve been hearing about it for awhile! Can’t wait to read it!! I preordered The Plan and The Wedding People is on my list, too, after a friend raved about it!
Love this! Would a middle schooler like a girl called Samson do you think or is it too mature?
Not a current read but i keep meaning to recommend a book that reminded me of What Alice Forgot! It’s a Christian fiction that I don’t think was preachy if I’m remembering right- When We Were Young by Karen Kingsbury.
