All About Our Art Room

When we bought this house, we were doing a pretty large-scale remodel which meant that just about every space was up for grabs.

When we walked into the little closet under the stairs, Bart said “this would be such a fun hangout space for the girls.”

And so, while it pained me to give up the storage space, we decided to make it into a little art room.

Of course, because it wasn’t a necessary space, it’s sat unfinished for more than a year since we moved in, but we finally finished it up this month and it’s so fun to finally see it ready to roll. The girls have been playing in it non-stop since we finished it, so it feels like a big win.

The space isn’t huge, but the back wall is decently long because it wraps under the stairs, so our contractor built a custom desk to run along it, long enough that all four girls could sit up at it.

We mounted the same good old IKEA picture ledges on the wall above to hold coloring books and art books.

On the shorter slanting wall perpendicular to the desk, we mounted a pegboard to hold all the art supplies (I ordered the organizing bins from Amazon) and on the wall next to the main door, we hung a white board.

There’s also a built-in cupboard along the back wall where we keep all the American Girl dolls, outfits, accessories and furniture.

The most fun part of the art room is that on the other side of the wall is the playroom, which has a huge bank of cabinets. Bart was very into the idea of a secret entrance, so the contractor popped out the back of one of the cabinets and framed it in so you can enter through there (and it also makes a little more space for sitting in the art room). It definitely adds a little whimsy to the space that I love!

I also dug up an ancient bulletin board that I bought at Goodwill 8 years ago in North Carolina and hung it on the wall to house special art projects or crafts.

Now I just need to add a garbage can and a recycle bin!

  1. I love this! Great secret art space and a better use of the under the stairs area. My grandkids (4 & 5 yrs old) would be there all the time. Thank you for using for your kiddos.
