Probably most of us don’t look forward to the shorter days of winter as it gets darker earlier every night.
So I really look forward to the Winter Solstice when we pass the shortest day of the year and the days start to add a few more minutes of sunshine.
There are some truly beautiful winter solstice books (my very favorite is The Shortest Day) and also ones that celebrate the Northern Lights which often take place on or around Winter Solstice.
Check out some of my favorite picture books about these winter events here:
6 Favorite Winter Solstice Books
The Shortest Day by Susan Cooper
I love Carson Ellis and her take on Susan Cooper’s poem about the Winter Solstice is stunning. This might be my favorite new addition to our Christmas picture books.
The Lights That Dance in the Night by Yuval Zommer
I still remember seeing the Northern Lights when I was really young and we lived in Wisconsin, so I was already inclined to love this book about the Northern Lights’ journey from space to Earth and how the animals and people on earth react to the magic of this natural phenomenon.
Winter: A Solstice Story by Kelsey E. Gross, illustrated by Renata Liwska
The soft muted illustrations of this book are just as peaceful as freshly fallen snow. In this sweet book, owl meets up with the other woodland creatures as they prepare for winter. Along the way, they create a solstice tree, and bring a little light to the darkest day of the year.
The Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice by Wendy Pfeffer, illustrated by Jesse Reisch
Out of all the books on this list, this one is the most informative. It describes how daylight grows shorter, explains the Earth’s tilt, and shows how the winter solstice has been celebrated throughout history.
Bright Winter Night by Alli Brydon
In this rhyming winter tale, the forest animals come together on a very special night in the hopes to see one of nature’s wonders. They search for items throughout the woods and together build a sled. Will they be able to build it in time?
Snow Party by Harriet Ziefert
Hooray for snow! Who wouldn’t want a snow party!? The snow people do, and they come from all over to celebrate the first snow – it just so happens to fall on the first day of winter!
