Room to Move

Can I just say, first off, how happy I am that the only moving going on at this point is by my little children and doesn’t include any moving trucks, unloading of furniture or unpacking of boxes?

We drove in on Monday evening of last week and our girls didn’t get back in the car until Wednesday morning. It seemed safer that way – I feared a full-scale baby rebellion.

Obviously, we drove to Target. (By the way, I spent YEARS thinking, “Why is everyone so into Target? I don’t get it.” Then I had children. And I totally, totally get it.)

We stocked up on all the essentials. By which I mean diapers.

And hangers (how is it possible that you never can have enough hangers? Did we leave a trail of hangers all the way from Austin to Durham?). We had a coupon for the diapers ($2 off!), but sadly, no coupons for the hangers.

Ani seems to have embraced the extra room in our house by becoming, overnight, an extremely wiggly baby. For a baby who can’t crawl yet, she is all over the place. Diaper changes are the absolute worst, because I keep all the diapers in a basket, and she seems CONVINCED that there is something amazing hiding in that basket (it’s just diapers! I promise!)

With regular diapers, I end up with a diaper that is SUPER tight on one side and crazy loose on the other side (tell me I’m not the only one who does this). These ones? Way easier. They slip right on and then, when it’s time for a diaper change, the sides tear right off.

When Ella saw these diapers she said, “These diapers are AWESOME. Are they like underwear?” She was beside herself with joy when I let her wear one to bed (she’s toilet-trained, but I’m still too much of a wimp to let her wear underwear through the night and, yes, both my three-year-old (her birthday is today!) and my seven-month-old wear the same size of diapers. Not a leak from either of them).

Ani says, “My older sister is kind of crazy.”
 “Oh well. I’ve resigned myself.”

We’re keeping the wiggling at bay by getting outside a lot. This neighborhood is beautiful – there’s a great little park just around the corner, and there are plenty of dogs out for walks in the evening, which makes Ella super happy. Plus, the weather isn’t quite as hot as Texas.

This is the prettiest place I’ve ever lived (I know you’re shocked Vegas doesn’t win that prize)

I think we’re all pretty happy to be here.

  1. I love the scooting phase, before they figure out the whole forward motion. You can tell they want to move forward, but they just can't quite figure it out. And they get themselves stuck in some pretty adorable places.

  2. My daughter is two months, so I love following Ani's development and getting excited about what my little girl might be like soon :).

I love it when babies are just starting to toddle around. Super adorable as they wobble around!

  8. I don't have any kids of my own yet, but I really enjoyed it when my friend's little boy was at the crawling/almost walking stage. Except that he never actually crawled. Instead he just sat on his butt and scooted around using his heels as propulsion before progressing straight to walking. Cutest thing ever watching him scoot around my kitchen trying to pet my cat who kept moving away.

  9. My daughter is a runner. She is 20 months now. She thinks she is going on 20 yrs old. She has no care if she falls or is gonna get hurt. She is a tomboy.

  10. Also, Target? We go weekly (occasionally bi-weekly). T has started saying, "No Target" when I tell him where we're going.

  11. I love when they can walk without holding on to anything but it's still so wobbly and cautious. I also love when babies discover their feet.
