Room to Move

Can I just say, first off, how happy I am that the only moving going on at this point is by my little children and doesn’t include any moving trucks, unloading of furniture or unpacking of boxes?

We drove in on Monday evening of last week and our girls didn’t get back in the car until Wednesday morning. It seemed safer that way – I feared a full-scale baby rebellion.

Obviously, we drove to Target. (By the way, I spent YEARS thinking, “Why is everyone so into Target? I don’t get it.” Then I had children. And I totally, totally get it.)

We stocked up on all the essentials. By which I mean diapers.

And hangers (how is it possible that you never can have enough hangers? Did we leave a trail of hangers all the way from Austin to Durham?). We had a coupon for the diapers ($2 off!), but sadly, no coupons for the hangers.

Ani seems to have embraced the extra room in our house by becoming, overnight, an extremely wiggly baby. For a baby who can’t crawl yet, she is all over the place. Diaper changes are the absolute worst, because I keep all the diapers in a basket, and she seems CONVINCED that there is something amazing hiding in that basket (it’s just diapers! I promise!)

With regular diapers, I end up with a diaper that is SUPER tight on one side and crazy loose on the other side (tell me I’m not the only one who does this). These ones? Way easier. They slip right on and then, when it’s time for a diaper change, the sides tear right off.

When Ella saw these diapers she said, “These diapers are AWESOME. Are they like underwear?” She was beside herself with joy when I let her wear one to bed (she’s toilet-trained, but I’m still too much of a wimp to let her wear underwear through the night and, yes, both my three-year-old (her birthday is today!) and my seven-month-old wear the same size of diapers. Not a leak from either of them).

Ani says, “My older sister is kind of crazy.”
 “Oh well. I’ve resigned myself.”

We’re keeping the wiggling at bay by getting outside a lot. This neighborhood is beautiful – there’s a great little park just around the corner, and there are plenty of dogs out for walks in the evening, which makes Ella super happy. Plus, the weather isn’t quite as hot as Texas.

This is the prettiest place I’ve ever lived (I know you’re shocked Vegas doesn’t win that prize)

I think we’re all pretty happy to be here.

  1. I love it when they start crawling and unsure if they should scoot, crawl on hands and knees or use their hands and feet

  2. I love when they start being able to sit by themselves. That sort of wide-eyed swaying before they topple over cracks me up!

  3. I don't actually have a baby myself…but my favorite state with my niece was when she started to walk and her chubby little legs were toddling around the house. So cute!

  4. I don't have any kids, but I do love Target! 🙂 I really like to hold brand-new babies, though. It's easier for me to hold them when they're super still and don't need to be constantly entertained.

  5. Ha! I was going to say I prefer for them not to be mobile, but I guess that's not really true. It does make life harder though. I do like it when they can navigate stairs on their own.

I'm glad your move went well!

  6. My favorite stage of mobility is two- does that still count as baby? She's finally stable enough that I don't worry about her going up or down the stairs on her own, and we have finally packed away the baby gate. Such a relief! Congrats on moving to Durham- we live nearby in Hillsborough. It's a great area!!

  7. My youngest just started taking his first steps… but my favorite way he gets around is his bear crawl. He is super fast and get where he wants to go without toching his arms or legs on the cold ground or prickly grass.

  8. I don't know if I have a favortie stage of baby mobility. I liked when I could just lay her down and then leave the room and come back to her being in the exact same spot!

But lately, I've been loving that my 1 year old can walk around by herself and she's aware of her surroundings and where she can go and where she can't go, so I don't have to constantly supervise her (we don't have a baby gate on our stairs, tsk tsk, and her room and the playroom are literally right at the top of the stairs, no falls down the stairs yet for either kid though, knock on wood). She has been trying to test her limits though, such as standing while holding the stair railing in one hand and hovering her foot over the open space above the stair (she has yet to try to take a step down), and climbing on the couch and onto the low tables (with other toys as step stools) so I'm guessing that she's going to be one adventurous little girl. My favorite though, is when the babies can learn to safely go down the stairs by themselves so I don't have to constantly worry. I guess I could just install a baby gate but they've gone so long without one anyway.

  9. Just recently had my second child and totally understand the lopsidedness of putting a diaper on. I am apparently out of practice (oldest is potty-trained) and have had a couple accidents already and he is only a week old!

  10. I don't know if it was really my favorite since once they start moving nothing is ever the same, but I liked the scooting. My daughter would scoot herself backwards. It was funny seeing where she would end up!

  11. You're asking at a terrible 3s time.. so I would say newborn. When they let me cuddle with them and not go running around slamming every door they can 🙂

  12. Oh my favorite stage is when they learn to crawl! So precious how they rock back and forth as they learn! My favorite time!

  13. My favorite time is when they take their first unsteady steps. So cute.
