For Ella’s birthday last month, one of her gifts was a subscription to OwlCrate Jr.

She’d previously been getting a different book subscription box, but she’d outgrown it and I was looking for something that would be more at her level.

OwlCrate Jr was the PERFECT fit.

You may know OwlCrate from their incredibly popular Young Adult book subscription box (it’s been around since 2015!) and they launched OwlCrate Jr the next year.

It’s a true middle-grade book subscription for readers ages 8-12 (or anyone who loves a good middle grade book!) and it is SO GOOD.

The thing that really impressed me right off the bat with OwlCrate Jr is that the whole experience is designed to make reading feel special and fun.

If you don’t think that’s something I can get behind, you don’t know me at all.

Each month’s box has a different theme and not only includes a hardback book, it also has 4-6 themed goodies to encourage creativity, imagination, and exploration.

(Another thing I love is that each month’s book is newly published within 45 days of when they ship it out, so you’re getting new releases instead of something you’re likely to already have read or already own).

Each month, there is an OwlCrate Jr Magazine Issue  and it has an interview with the author, three more recommended books if you loved this one, some activities and an interview with a kid who is an OwlCrate Jr subscriber.

I’ve never really had the feeling with any other book subscription box that you belonged to a COMMUNITY, but this one really gave me that vibe and I love it.

I also love that the goodies included are often designed by small businesses or independent artists. You can just see the love of books, reading, and creativity sparkling through every part of OwlCrate Jr.

The first box Ella got was the July “Creativity Conquers All” box and I was FLOORED by how good it is.

The book for July was Kiki Kallira Breaks a Kingdom. It’s a fantasy adventure about Kiki Kallira who deals with her anxiety by drawing and doodling (she particularly loves drawing the Indian myths and legends her mother has told her throughout her childhood). But things take a turn for the not-at-all soothing when her drawings start coming to life and she falls into the magical world she’s created with her pencil. Now it’s up to her save the world, armed only with her drawing abilities.

Along with the hardcover book (which includes a letter from the author and a signed bookplate!), there are watercolor paints, an art supply kit, watercolor paper, washi tape, and a gorgeous tassel bookmark.

Oh, and each month there is a collectible sticker.

I don’t know if this post can accurately convey HOW impressed I am by OwlCrate Jr, but . . . you guys, I’m SO impressed.

This is the kind of thing I would have absolutely lost my mind over as a preteen (let’s be honest, I’m almost 36 and I’m STILL just about losing my mind over how good it is).
