Late and Maybe Never Would Have Been Better

Obviously, this is not about the arrival of my baby. Let’s just get that out of the way right now.

No, this is about Eclipse.

After Twilight came out and then again last fall with New Moon, I felt like the Internet was ablaze with discussion and excitement over the movies. I came home from seeing each one, anxious to see it again (in both cases, I forced Bart to go back with me to see it a second time within a week or so of seeing it the first time).

I was full of things to say about each movie (as evidenced by my insanely lengthy posts here and here), and this time, I feel strangely silent on the topic (Sherry is cheering. Also, notice that despite “feeling silent” I am writing an entire post on it. . . ).

Eclipse was my favorite book by a long, long shot. And the movie was, almost without question, the best of the three so far – many less awkward moments, better acting, better everything, but for some reason, I just didn’t feel the same affinity for this movie as I did for the last two, despite their far lower quality.

We went opening night and instead of the mad house that was the theater on opening night for the previous two releases, the theater was only maybe three-quarters full.

Am I the only one who has no idea what’s going on? Why is no one talking about this?

  1. The other movies didn't come out in the summertime. Most people have alot more going on in the summer and other exciting things to look forward to. During the dreary winter months, they grab on to whatever excitement comes their way.
    That's my theory.

  2. I have a lengthy post about just this topic…rolling around in my head. Maybe my silence is laziness? I do know this: my Haley, who saw the other two movies about 82 times in the theater, is sort of "ehhh" about this one, and we haven't gone to see it yet.

I should warn you though…when i do write it, it won't be anything positive. I am not a fan of Ms. Meyer. 😉

  3. I think Twilight fans felt the need to defend their love of the first two movies. Eclipse the movie is far superior in almost every way, so the lovers of the saga still feel the love without the need to desperately defend it. I feel confident that I can take Joey to see this with me again and he won't have to roll his eyes through the entire thing like he did in New Moon.

  4. I have been thinking and wondering the same thing. After seeing the first two, I couldn't wait to get home and discuss my many, MANY thoughts with the internet. This time I really just don't have much to say. I liked it! I did! It was far better than the first two. I just… don't have any strong feelings? There were still plenty of problems and things that pissed me off, but I feel more inclined to discuss my disappointment over The Last Airbender than Eclipse. And you know how I feel about Twilight in general. It's very odd.

  5. I too left the theater feeling like the movie was just ok. It wasn't bad, and there were definitely improvements quality-wise, but I didn't feel the need to rush back out and see it again (which I definitely did with New Moon). My thinking is that it just felt too much like the last movie – same vampire out to get Bella, same conflict between Jacob and Edward, and not a heck of a lot of progress. I did love the alliance between Jacob and Edward's families, but I think the fact that the storyline felt pretty linear was what did it for me. Also, the ending of New Moon left you wanting more pretty much immediately (and who doesn't love a good cliffhanger?), whereas this one… not so much. I will admit, though, that I have only read up through New Moon (the shame!), so sadly I cannot compare the movie to the book.

But can I just say, Jacob's line about kissing Bella and her punching him in his face had me in a fit of giggles. Love him!

  6. Wait, the 3rd book was your favorite? Really?? The 3rd book is the one where I can never remember what it is even about.

  7. I assumed you hadn't seen it yet, because you hadn't even mentioned it to me in our IM chats.

I also haven't read any blog posts about it. I definitely heard a ton about it on the news, and there were plenty of people talking about it on Facebook, but it seems the bloggy world is silent. (And that is fine with me.)

  8. I was breathing a sigh of relief that it wasn't plastered all over the internet. Crazy bloggers with their countdowns and a million posts before and after the movie was released. It's about freaking time everyone calmed down a bit.

  9. Once again I ask the same question: What's the big fat hairy deal over the Twilight books??? Great literature? Hardly. Memorable characters? Come on, now, really. So how could the movies be worth seeing? I know I'm harsh. I'm just about to read S. Meyer's unofficial biography for a little more insight. I DO need to cut her more slack.

  10. Come to Utah. It's all anyone talks about. However, I think it isn't being as discussed because people are getting over it…? Maybe? Personally, and yes I posted about it, too, I am getting more and more annoyed with the movies because they seem so hurried, very let's just get to the action parts, and while they are getting better, the acting is still mediocre at best and too, there isn't such a roar this time about Jacob and his muscles because everyone has already seen them. My biggest annoyance is why do they have to make the entire Cullen family look so bad?? SERIOUSLY. They are all much more attractive in person. I would rather they not look exactly like their descriptions in the book and still be pretty than have horrible hair (Alice, I'm talking about YOU). Seriously awful. Ok, I'm done. 🙂

  11. I think it might have to do with where you are as far as the crowds go. Here in AZ it was WAY more crazy than it was in Philadelphia for New Moon!

  12. I have been waiting for your eclipse post. I saw it and really liked it but I think because this is #3 the novelty is wearing off a bit. People still like them but just don't feel the need to obsess about it. And I'm ok with that.

  13. I've been shocked by the lack of response as well. We had such a large group for New Moon, we had to sit on opposite sides of the theater, whereas there were only five of us for Eclipse. Our little group read the books and have seen the movies together, so we've planned this outing for months. The movie did open right before the 4th of July which is a hectic time in people's lives.

  14. Didn't read the others' comments. I have read in a couple blogs that this movie is better than the others, but I haven't seen any actual discussion. (I haven't seen any of the movies, so I can't discuss.)

  15. I feel kind of 'meh' towards this movie. It's not bad – in fact it was pretty good, but….I don't know. I'm not dying to see it again which is weird 'cause that's how I felt about Twilight and especially New Moon…

It left me with an odd feeling. I'm not really sure how I felt about it. I can't say whether I liked it or not and that is a very unusual thing for me…

  16. Apparently it varies by location. It wasn't as popular here as Twilight was, but there was still plenty of talk about it, and I know several women who camped out on opening night. I thought the movie was better than the first two, but of course, that isn't saying too much. 🙂

  17. It's funny you wrote about this, because I felt the exact way when I saw Eclipse. I did like it, but was a little surprised that the theater wasn't packed. I pretty much agree with everything that Katie Rich said!
