5 Books I’m Currently Reading

Between a holiday weekend and now a trip down to Las Vegas this coming week, it basically feels like it’s time to pull out ALL the books and not look up for ten days.

I just love summer reading so much – there’s nothing that feels more glorious to me than sitting on the porch with a book while the girls play in the backyard or lying in the grass under our big maple tree and reading aloud to my girls.

Here are five books I’m reading (or listening to) right now!

5 Books I’m Currently Reading

The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett
This book has been getting SO much buzz since it came out last month. It’s about twin sisters that run away from their tiny town in the South together but soon separate. Years later, one of the sisters returns to her home town with her daughter, with no idea what’s happened to her twin.

The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich
This book was on my list of titles to read aloud to my girls this year (you can see that full list here) and I’m delighted that it finally came up on hold at the library. It’s about a seven year old girl, Omakayas who lives on an island in Lake Superior in the 1840s. My girls listened to all the Little House books last year, so they were delighted to read more about that same time period, this time from a Native perspective. I particularly love the beautiful illustrations.

Juana and Lucas: Big Problemos by Juana Medina
During the school year (before school got canceled), I read aloud to Star every afternoon before the girls got home and while Tally took a nap. Star LOVED this time and we’ve started it up again in the last month since she lives for a little individual attention. We finished the first book in this series last week and just dove into this second book – they’re DARLING.

Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev
I like Jane Austen, but I’m not such a huge fan that I’ll read anything that’s a riff on her books. But I’ve heard so many great things about this book (and that the companion book is even better!) so I snagged a copy and so far, I’m loving it.

Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do by Jennifer L. Eberhardt
I’ve heard all sorts of good things about this book, so I grabbed an audio copy. So far, it reminds me a little of Quiet with a great mix of storytelling and research.

And if you’d like a printable copy of this list that you can take to your library or screenshot on your phone for easy access, just pop in your email address below and it’ll come right to your inbox!

What are you reading right now? I’d love to hear!
