The Babymouse books were one of my earliest introductions to graphic novels.
When I took over as an elementary school librarian, the library had no graphic novels and as my students started to express interest in them, I ordered a few with my extremely limited book budget.
And those books never went back on the library shelves the entire year – one child would return them and they’d instantly be snatched from the return bin and checked out again.
Babymouse has continued to be a hit with my own four kids!
If you love Babymouse or have students or children who do, here are a few other series to try out!

More Books to Try If You Liked Babymouse Books

Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson
Raise your hand if you have a small unicorn lover at your house? I’ve got three and this book was a smash hit. Everything in this book happened by accident when Phoebe skipped a rock across the water and, entirely by mistake, smacked a unicorn in the face. And who knew that this leads to getting a wish granted? Possibly the best part is that the unicorn’s name is Marigold Heavenly Nostrils.

Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea by Ben Clanton
Narwhal and Jelly don’t have much in common but they do both LOVE waffles and they’re always up for an adventure together as the explore the ocean. This easy reader chapter book series leans more toward graphic novel format, so they’re a nice option for young readers who gravitate toward those.

Cat & Cat Adventures by Susie Yi
Meet Ginny and Squash, two adorable snack-loving cat friends, who are always on some sort of silly adventure! Get ready to be transported to a magical world in this cute fantasy series.

Squish by Jennifer Holm and Matthew Holm
This duo wrote the Babymouse series, and it has also been a hit at our house and has more boy appeal than the all-pink Babymouse series.

Lunch Lady by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
This was the first graphic novels for kids series I ever read and I remember clearly reading it on the train in Boston and thinking, “This is SO clever.” The black and white with yellow color scheme is so appealing and it’s full of nutty adventures and hilarious crime-fighting tools from lunch lady supplies. I’ve never met a child who didn’t love these.

The Princess in Black by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale, illustrated by LeUyen Pham
Most of the time, she’s Princess Magnolia, prim and proper. But when her Monster Alarm rings, she transforms into the Princess in Black and no monster will get the better of her!

Owly by Andy Runton
Poor little Owly. He’s so sweet, but he’s so lonely. All he really wants is a friend. And in this two-part graphic novel, he might just find one.

Unicorn and Yeti by Heather Ayris Burnell
Unicorn and Yeti are an unlikely pair, but they’re also best friends. Each book has three stories in an almost graphic-novel format and any unicorn-lover will not be able to get enough of these delightful books.

Owl Diaries: Eva’s Treetop Festival by Rebecca Elliott
Who wouldn’t want to be an owl and live in a treehouse and keep a diary of all the fun you have at school and with your friends? If 12 books in the series is any indication, EVERYONE wants to be an owl! I especially love that it’s made to look like it’s written on lined-paper.
