Are You Online?

Seriously, you folks are very nice. I really appreciate all your congratulatory comments (perhaps even more than I appreciated the lovely tuna sushi on Monday night (or at least almost as much)). Really, you make me want to have a baby, just to tell you all. Thank you.

I’ve really been amazed how awesome this blogging thing has turned out to be. At first it was mostly just my family and a few college friends who read it, but it’s been so fun to meet new people and find great new blogs and feel like I have real friends in people I don’t really know at all.

A few months ago, I got a comment from Kayla who’d gone to BYU too – we’d had a number of mutual friends and I’d heard her name a lot, but I think we’d only met once (and that was briefly). We started commenting though and then switched to emailing and sometimes we send upwards of 8 emails back and forth (and these aren’t wimpy little one or two sentence emails, folks, these are REAL emails. . .they rock). When I see a hideous wedding dress and need someone to discuss the merits of bolero jackets with lapels with, well, Kayla’s the one I turn to.

Another person I vaguely knew from college (we had a class together, she worked for my father-in-law, my husband was a teaching assistant for a class of hers) found my blog and we’ve IMed many a time now, sharing stories, talking about people we both know, asking for recipes, etc. It’s too bad that we waited until we lived many states apart to become friends. Alas. She introduced me to her sister’s blog and I love reading about their families and their crazy adventures (you should see the pictures from “Talk like a Pirate Day” – it’s quite awe-inspiring). (By the way, both of their blogs, while awesome, are private, so I can’t share).

A few weeks ago, I got an email from Chloe, asking if I knew anyone doing the MBA program at UT and if so, could I connect her with them? This email made my day – my presence on the internet was doing someone GOOD (also, I didn’t have to talk on the phone, but just send an email. Whew! Hooray for the Internet not usually wanting to phone). I’ve never met Chloe (she’s a friend of a friend), but I feel like I know her well.

When I was trying to decide what programs to apply to, Ben had some excellent advice on the subject of “library school.” (Good thing too, because the school I was asking about had such a horrendous website that I couldn’t find any of the information I needed to make an educated decision).

I have had lovely exchanges with Isabel, Janet, and Heidikins – all people I’ve never met and have no connection to in the real world at all, but who I feel like are, to some extent, my friends. Those people are the Internet. . .they are so cool!

Anyway, just thanks. Thanks for commenting, thanks for sharing, and thanks for being fabulous.

  1. I LOVE blogging for that. I’ve gotten to know so many different people. As it turns out, there’s a blogging circle of sorts in my ward and once they found out I had one I got included and ended up becoming a lot better friends with all the girls. I got to know you way better (the e-mails? They are awesome) since we didn’t really have the chance at BYU, and I’ve made friends with people I’ve never met before. LOVE love love it. Such a great tool for making friends!!

  3. Yes, I too enjoy blogging for the purpose of meeting new people. Although I do sometimes feel like a stalker leaving a comment on someone’s blog who I don’t know. “Hi, you don’t know me….but I know you…” 🙂 I love reading your blog. Keep up the good work!

  4. Awww, this post is so sweet, thank you! I totally feel the same way. I think it’s what has kept me blogging for 2+ years! xoxo

  5. That is so how I feel about this whole blogging world. Anne, my marathon buddy, is a blogging friend.

Thanks again for the hook up. And, I will be even more excited if I get in because I know that I have at least one sushi friend already (and that is very, very important to me)! 😉

  6. Congratulations on your acceptance into grad school!

When I was looking for a hotel recommendation for Boston, I e-mailed a blogger I barely know before it occurred to me that there are people in my “real” life that used to live in Boston. And the blogger was helpful and responded quickly, so it was awesome!

  7. Janssen-
I made a goal this week to comment on everyone’s blogs that I’ve recently started to read. You’re a lucky winner! This is Sammy Ashton – Jacobson whatever you get the idea! Anyway thanks for entertaining me with your blog! And GONRATS on grad school that’s awesome!

  8. Blogging is the best. When I started a million year ago, I had NO idea the friends and community I would find online. It’s been a major part of my life…and one that I didn’t know was even out there.

I’m glad you’re online and liking it as much as the rest of us!

  9. I’ve only been a “blogger” since July, and I am already addicted. I’ve loved getting to know you through your witty posts. funny, but Noelle just told me about a song she heard called, “I’m much better online” or something like that.
