4 Books I’m Currently Reading (+ my team’s picks)

After likely the worst reading summer of my life, I’ve been getting back in the swing of reading and it feels amazing!

There’s just no better feeling than being drawn into a new book!

the mouse and the motorcycle

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
We’re doing Brave Writer for our Language Arts curriculum this year (for my 4th and 6th graders) and one of the reasons I picked it was because it is literature based and I liked the book list! Our first book is The Mouse and the Motorcycle and I never get tired of Beverly Cleary. I’m loving reading it aloud to my little girls and then working through the associated curriculum together.

The Bright Years by Sarah Damoff
I read her newer book – The Burning Side – earlier this summer and loved it (and sobbed my way through the end on an airplane. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this. It should be rom-coms only for reading in public for me!). So many people said they liked her first book, The Bright Years, even better, so I picked that for my Amazon Music Unlimited title this month and have been really enjoying it (although I think I liked The Burning Side more).

Autumn on My Mind by Gracie Ruth Mitchell
I blew through the first book in this series (each book is written by a different author but they’re all set in the same Vermont town and are swoony closed-door romances) and I immediately dove into the second book in the series. Give me all the fall vibes!

Against Convenience: Embracing Friction in an Age of Endless Ease by Gabe Bullard
This book is coming out next month, but I got an advance copy and was immediately drawn in by the title! I’m about 10% of the way through it and it is giving me so much to think about!

And here’s what my team is reading!

the soulmate book

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
I read Sally Hepworth’s The Good Sister a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, so I picked up The Soulmate during a reading slump, and was hooked. I ended up reading two more of her books right after! This dual-perspective thriller follows two wives, one of whom dies after falling from a cliff, while the other begins to question why her husband (a man who talks people off cliffs) didn’t save her.

mad mabel book

Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth
It’s a Sally Hepworth month! I’ve also read the two Kelsey mentioned above, plus Darling Girls and The Mother-in-Law. It’s safe to say, I really like Sally Hepworth’s writing style. Elsie, an 81 year old Australian woman, has spent decades hiding a shocking secret: she was once known as Mad Mabel, Australia’s youngest convicted murderer. When a neighbor turns up dead her past starts to be dug up. This sounds like a dark book, and it possibly could be, but so far, Elsie’s quick wit has had me laughing!

Next Level by Stacy Sims
Over the past year I’ve delved into the science of weight lifting and nutrition quite a bit. One of my favorite experts regarding all things female fitness and nutrition is Stacy Sims. She recently wrote Next Level to address women’s fitness in perimenopause and beyond. I turned 35 this year, but I think I’m the strongest I’ve ever been and I’m hoping I haven’t reached my peak yet. This book is such a great reference guide! (I also loved her first book, Roar, about female nutrition.)
