4 Books I’m Reading Right Now (+ My Team’s Picks!)
I love summer now in a way I never really did living most of my life in hot places like Las Vegas, Arizona, and Texas.
But now that we live in Utah, I absolutely GLORY in summer.
That doesn’t mean that I’m not still thrilled when fall rolls around. I love the change of seasons, my birthday, and the excitement of the upcoming holidays.
And, of course, more cozy reading time as the days get cooler and the sun sets earlier.
Here are four books I’m reading right now (+ my team’s picks!)
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
This is one of my all-time favorite childhood books and feels quintessentially cozy and perfect for fall. I’m loving reading this one aloud to my girls before we jump into this year’s Halloween read aloud (if you need some Halloween read aloud ideas, I have a whole list of suggestions here!). Just be warned that if you read Farmer Boy, you’ll DEFINITELY get hungry – those descriptions of the meals are incredible!
The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
I’m getting a head start on October’s book for Everyday Reading Book Club! I read my first Ruth Ware last year and have read most of her books now – I LOVE her books (you can see my ranking of her books here!). This is one I haven’t read, though, and I’ve been saving it all year to read this fall.
The Bletchley Riddle by Ruda Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin
I got an early copy of this audiobook which I’ve been waiting for all summer – when Ruta Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin get together to co-write a book about WWII codebreakers, you know that’s a book you aren’t going to want to miss. This story takes place in the summer of 1940 with two siblings who love riddles and puzzles. And they live in the right place for that since they live at Britain’s top secret codebreaking factory, Bletchley Park, where the brightest minds work together to crack the Nazi’s infamous Enigma cipher.
Rebel Summer by Cindy Steel
Sometimes I love seasonal reading and sometimes I’m just reading fully out of season. I read and loved The One with the Kiss Cam a few weeks ago and I picked up Rebel Summer by the same author after several people told me it was their favorite read of the summer. So far, this audiobook is delightful and just right for listening to on a run!
ANALESE
Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan
I have been on a huge reading drought since summer started. Instead of finding more time to read, I found it harder and harder to find the time to listen and/or sit down and read with everyone home. With that being said, I have finished two books since school started and I was thrilled this one finally came up on my holds! Ali is a professional organizer who lost her mom and her marriage all in two years. Without the hint of trying to find someone new, Ethan comes in to her life and seems like he is just what she needs for the time being. I’m not very far into this one yet, but if it’s anything like her other book, Nora Goes Off Script, I know I’m going to love it!
KRISTIN
The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower
I’m rereading this series in hopes that by the time I finish, Beth Brower will have announced a release date for book 8. This is truly my favorite series of all time! Set in London in 1883, this is Emma’s journal of her odd but delightful life. The books are clever and charming, balanced with depth, thoughtfulness, and the best cast of characters I’ve found. This is one of the few books I recommend to just about anyone, confident that they will enjoy it as much as I do.
KELSEY
Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
I am a little embarrassed to say it, but excluding the chapter books I read to my little ones, I haven’t read a physical book since January (I am in my audiobook era). Feeling daunted about jumping back in, I decided to ease my way back, and this middle grade novel was just what I needed. To the vein of Little House on the Prairie, Hanna, a half-Chinese girl, adapts to life in her new frontier town. I loved getting to read about life in this time period from a whole new perspective.
JENNIFER
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett I started reading this book to my six year old daughter and it has been absolutely delightful. I watched the movie a very long time ago, but I’ve never read the book. Sara Crewe’s positive outlook on life, imagination and charisma is so charming and sparks great discussion with my daughter. This classic story is a heartwarming one and worth a read at any age!
