Very Bookish

Several months ago, the lovely RA sent out an email to a group of book-loving bloggers and asked if we wanted to start an online book club. Despite my deep trepidation of ever having to choose a book for others to have to read, I agreed. Because, well, an online book club! Other people to blather on endlessly about good books with – I couldn’t say no.

Last month, the first month, was a big success with three different books and dozens of comments.

Then this month it was my turn to pick a book and write a weekly post about it. Terrifying.

I finally settled on Graceling at the very last possible moment because I’d heard nothing but awesome things about it. But oh, it was difficult to commit. To say to a dozen other people, “This book is worth your valuable time.”

I read the first 120 pages over the weekend and wrote my first post. And then other people started saying they’d really liked the book too and my terror started to recede a bit.

And then I kept reading the book (I’m now about 300 pages in) and I stopped caring what anyone else thinks about the book because I’m just flat out loving it. It may be the best book I’ve read this year. And I’ve read some fairly good books already this year.

Anyway, you can go check it out here if you wish: Very Bookish.

  1. Argh, I hate that my library has zero copies of this book! I am trying so hard not to buy books but the libs is making it very difficult.

  2. It reminds me of when I kept talking up LOST to you guys, and then I heard you started watching it and I kept biting my nails in anticipation because all of the sudden I was doubting myself…but then I remembered how everyone in the world LOVES LOST…but still, what if you didn’t? It could have been a deal breaker and then I wouldn’t be able to invite you over to bring me dessert!

I’ll have to check out that book. I am reading Water for Elephants, and loving it so far.

  3. Amen, to Operation Pink Herring. It is so annoying and frustrating, because our library has nothing and our local “book” store is really a gift/tourist (maps, local history) store. And, there is only one real bookstore (with limited selection) within a four hour drive.

To Janssen and friends, my must-find-the-books-mentioned-in-Janssen’s-blog list is getting really long, but keep up the good work!

  4. I am go glad you picked this book- one, because I loved it, and two because I already own it! I’m so glad you’re loving it like I did.

  5. Also, have you read A Certain Slant of Light, by Laura Whitcomb? I think you’d like that one, too.

  6. I still have it in my shopping cart, but I’m not there yet. But now I’m scared about my own book choice, come April.

  7. I’m lovely! Woo!

I also love Graceling, but I wouldn’t hold it against you if I didn’t. How would you know how it would be if you’ve never read it? And even if you had, how could you predict what I would like? I’ve gone through enough duds in my real-life book club that I am totally inured to it. No harm, no foul. As long as there’s conversation, it’s cool.

  8. Did you ever read Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut? Reread that while I was in Argentina last month, curious what your thoughts were if you have.

  9. I’m intending to make a trip to either my local library or amazon.com very soon and this will be on my must-get list!
