In my first semester of graduate school, a panel of librarians working in different capacities in libraries around Austin came to speak to one of my classes.
I can’t remember a thing about this panel except that one of the librarians over the children’s department of the Austin Public Library system, talking about the summer reading program, said that the only prizes they gave out were books.
“We don’t want kids to read to get a donut or a free pizza. The reward for reading is more reading.”
This is probably in the top five most memorable things from my grad school experience, and I think about this all the time (and remember it when I read studies about how children who get a reward for coloring end up not wanting to color without a reward).
Anyway, while I’m always looking for ways to make reading fun and engaging for my children, I also try to make sure I’m not rewarding reading with unrelated prizes and incentives.
One thing that makes reading fun for me is sharing books with friends, and given the popularity of book clubs, reading groups, Goodreads, and other book-sharing sites and programs, I know I’m not alone.
There’s already two books for one purchase with this program, but I loved the idea of getting more than one reader for the book that came to our house.
After we read our copy a few times, I had the girls pick a friend or cousin they wanted to send it on to.
We wrote a little note in the front of the book with the date and a favorite page to look for, and then wrapped it in brown packaging and sent it off via media mail (which is super cheap – about $2.50 to ship a book anywhere in the U.S.).
My girls love mail, and we enjoyed imagining their cousins opening the mailbox and finding a surprise package just for them.
Because if there’s anything better than reading a good book, it’s sharing that book with someone you love.
