Savvy Math is Here!!
Almost from the moment we launched Savvy Reading two years ago, there has been an endless stream of questions asking if we could do something similar for math.
After a million responses where I had to say, “Hopefully some day!” Savvy Math is finally a reality!
We’ve been working on Savvy Math all year long and you can sign up now! Savvy Math classes will start on Sept 6th (just after Labor Day).
Here’s what you should know about Savvy Math:
- It will follow the same 25 minute lessons/4 days a week (M-Th) schedule as our Savvy Reading classes do.
- We’re launching with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade levels (we’re already working on adding 1st and 5th later this fall!).
- Like Savvy Reading, Savvy Math levels are based on the level your child is currently at, not necessarily what grade level they are in – so they may be in sixth grade, but if they’re at a 3rd grade level, we’ll place them in the level that’s the right fit for their current skills.
- We’ll have individual and small group (max of 4 learners) options available.
- And like Savvy Reading, it’s designed to be really fun and engaging.
We’ve been testing Savvy Math all summer and here’s some of the feedback we’ve gotten from parents and learners:
My daughter loved math! Like Savvy Reading, it was challenging but not too difficult that she didn’t want to participate.
He thought the class was fun!
My daughter was talking a lot about “doubles” after it was over. She really liked that strategy.
He loved the math classes and I think it expanded his math thinking. He was even taught a new subject matter! Math hasn’t been a particular challenge for my son, but he enjoyed it and we would consider it if we needed help filling a gap in his learning like we’re doing with Savvy Reading (3 bizarre years with slow reading growth this last year – pandemic and teacher emergency related).
I’m so excited that it’ll finally be available to more students and can’t wait for them to experience the delight of math being fun, engaging and interesting.
And the best news is that this week is our Back to School sale for both Savvy Math and Savvy Reading, so if you sign up by Thursday night, you can use the code BACKTOSCHOOL for $25 off every month of your subscription!
What questions do you have about Savvy Math? I’m happy to help!
How will the students do a live math class without manipulatives? Will you send out manipulatives for use during class? What is the instructional foundation for this course? Is it problem based or traditional?
We’ll definitely be using manipulatives! Learners will be encourage to use their fingers and common household items to use as manipulatives in levels 1 & 2. In upper levels learners will be encouraged to draw out ideas. All levels rely heavily on pictorial representations. Not only will learners visual see manipulatives on the screen, they’ll also be encouraged to draw those representations in easy to draw ways such as base 10 blocks drawn as a dot, line, and square to represents ones, tens and hundreds. This helps incorporate the kinesthetic movement you get while manipulating manipulatives.
The instructional foundation for the course is based off of evidence-based math practices or EBP’s. These are practices and strategies that have been proven to be effective through research such as explicit instruction, visual representations, schema-based instruction, math language integration, and peer interaction. Each lesson integrates these practices to maximize student understanding of concepts. Lessons bring together traditional and problem-based approaches by incorporating explicit instruction followed by problem-based application.
