Today is my Mom's birthday (thirtieth, probably, although I haven't done the math). She is pretty fabulous. I mentioned several months ago how she always sends me little gifts and cards; what I didn't mention is that usually they're addressed from "TGM" which stands for "The Good Mom." It's one of my favorite little jokes of hers. Perhaps my other favorite little thing she does: whenever she buys one of us some article of clothing or accessory that we like, she says "I've still got ... Read More about Happy Birthday Mom

Peter and the Star Catchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson
I love Dave Barry. My parents both adore Dave Barry, as does my grandmother, and they've been reading or handing off various columns and books of his to me for as long as I can remember. I've read practically every column he's ever written and most of his books. For some reason, though, I've never read his novels, Big Trouble and Tricky Business. I love his non-fiction columns, so I was less interested in his fictional books. Then, when I went home for Christmas, my brother was reading the ... Weekends Worth Living For
I love Sunday evenings. We get home from church, we have dinner, Bart does the dishes, and then we usually just lie on the couches and read or talk until bed time. Occasionally, we'll play a board game together. We rarely go out anywhere on Sunday night. I like how relaxing and calm it is before we jump back into the week. We just rearranged our living room a bit more last night (check out our family blog, 26vibrations.blogspot.com, for pictures), and it's so nice in here now. We bought two ... Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously by Julie Powell
My mom bought me this book as a Christmas gift, probably because in the past year I have become quite the cooking junkie, although nothing like Julie Powell. I like to cook and I always enjoy a good challenge (see: read a book a week), but this one I couldn't do. The episodes of cooking brains, slicing apart a live lobster, and eating all sorts of internal organs really disgusts me. julie & julia: my year of cooking dangerously by julie powell Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking ... The Goose Girl – Shannon Hale
One of my goals for 2007 was to read a book a week and write about each book here. We shall see how this goes. The Goose Girl was an excellent book, and I'm glad to have started the year out with a book I enjoyed so much. My in-laws sent me this book for my birthday, which was way back in September and it's clearly taken me a while to get to it. I read about eight chapters in December and then, in the shuffle of Christmas and New Years, I didn't get back to it. On Monday night I picked it up ... Read More about The Goose Girl – Shannon Hale
