All About the Mother Daughter Book Club We Joined
Earlier this year, a neighbor invited my 5th grader and me to join a mother daughter book club.
My daughter was thrilled and it’s been a fun thing for us to participate in together so far!
Every time I’ve mentioned it, I’ve gotten a million questions, so here’s a quick rundown on how it’s working.

The mom/daughter duo that started it invited 9 sets of moms and daughters and all the daughters are 4th or 5th graders. Some of us knew each other and some of us didn’t – I believe all of us live in the same neighborhood.
The first month that we met, the duo that started the book club chose the book (they picked The First State of Being) and another mother and daughter offered to host book club that month.
Four sets of moms and daughters attended that first time and the hosting mom and daughter made homemade pizzas, had a big veggie tray and some fun drinks and we sat in the kitchen and ate dinner (we met at 6pm on a Friday night).
After everyone was done eating, we went into the living room with some treats for dessert (chocolate popcorn, gummy candies, etc) and the mom who had picked the book led the discussion which lasted about 30 minutes.
She gave everyone a paper and some crayons and gave us a few minutes to draw where in time we’d want to visit if we could time travel (since The First State of Being is a time travel book).
Afterward, she had several questions that she asked the group and I was surprised and impressed by how much the girls all had to say (and the moms jumped in too).
We wrapped up by 7:15 p.m. and everyone headed home. It was a perfect, low-key evening!
Another mom and daughter volunteered to pick the next book and we’re hosting at our house. We picked a Thursday evening and we’ll be doing just snacks and dessert because it’ll be a little late this time for dinner. I can’t wait!
I’ll keep sharing on Instagram what books we do as this goes on and I’d love to hear if you’ve done a mother daughter book club or something like this!
