4 Books I’m Currently Reading (+ my team’s picks!)

My reading year has gotten off to a good start (meaning that I haven’t yet fallen more than 2 books behind my goal on Goodreads!).

So far, my favorite book has been The Favorites which absolutely blew me away (do not miss the audio of it!)

Here are some of the books I’m reading right now!

The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol. 6 by Beth Brower I started this series over a year ago, got 30% through book 1 and stalled out. Finally this past fall, I blew through book 1 in a single sitting and have been steadily working my way through the rest of the series since then. They just keep getting more delightful and I fully understand why people love this series so much! (Stay tuned for a post about what to read after Emma!)

City Limits: Infrastructure, Inequality, and the Future of America’s Highways by Megan Kimble I know this probably sounds as dull as dirt, but I’m SO into and can’t stop talking to my husband about it (also, my main complaint about our location for years has been that we don’t live very close to the freeway and now I see that as a BONUS rather than a downfall). It is super readable (I’m listening to the audiobook) and a perfect companion to Walkable City which I read years ago and still think about at least once a week.

By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder I read aloud the first four books in the series to my oldest daughter almost a decade ago but my two younger girls didn’t know this beloved series at all. It’s been so fun to pull out my old library copies (my mom bought them for 25 cents when our little Wisconsin library discarded them when I was 5 or so and I’ve loved these battered hardback copies from the 1950s ever since) and read them aloud. I haven’t read this one in YEARS!

All the colors of the dark

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker This book has been sitting on my shelf for months and when it was one of the most-listed “favorite read of 2024” by my Instagram community (you can see the whole list here!), I decided it was finally time to pick this one up!

And here is what my team is reading right now!

Analese

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio
I’m not a huge Shakespeare person, so if it weren’t for the first chapter that caught my attention, I probably wouldn’t have continued on with this book. It starts out with Oliver being released from jail after being there for ten years right after his final year of school. The book goes on to recount what actually happened during his fourth year of school at the Shakespearean Conservatory. I’m really hooked now and can’t wait to see how it ends.

Jennifer

The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile I went to a girl’s night to celebrate a friend’s birthday last week and everyone started talking about their enneagram number. I only had the vaguest idea what they were talking about, but they were talking about it so enthusiastically that I knew I needed to one- know what they were talking about and two- figure out what number I am! I read The Road Back to You in about two days and continued to engage in our very fun conversation that moved to a text thread when our girls’ night ended. I’m happy to report that my enneagram number is a 2 and that I am very compatible with my number 7 husband.

be ready when the luck happens

Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten
I just finished listening to the audio of this one and it lived up to the good things I’d heard about it! I don’t normally gravitate toward memoirs but Ina is so charming and her story was so interesting that I enjoyed the whole thing. I really love hearing about the career development of successful women and she tells it all with such candor and humility. Now I’ve got four of her cookbooks checked out from the library to browse through!

Kelsey

The Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent
This was my first read of 2025 and it had me gripped! Raised off the grid in a remote cabin, Wren and her sister are abandoned when their mother disappears after seeking help for their sick little sister. As winter approaches and supplies dwindle, a stranger arrives, demanding answers. Forced to flee, Wren and Sage confront a hidden world beyond the forest and uncover dark secrets about their past. I did not predict any of the twists in this one!
