When I’m in the mood for a book that will make me laugh and remind me how much I love reading, Sophie Kinsella’s books are one of my go-tos.

I’ve read every book she’s written and many of them multiple times (my favorites are Can You Keep a Secret?, I’ve Got Your Number, Twenties Girl, The Party Crasher and The Undomestic Goddess).

She’s most well-known for her Shopaholic book series, which is also a delight, even if you’ll kind of die a little inside at the over-the-top spending. This was one of the first series I read when I was reading again for fun after a long hiatus during high school and college and I’ll never forget the sheer delight of blowing through a just-for-fun book.

If you’re looking for more books like Sophie Kinsella’s or her Shopaholic books, here are some of my favorite read-alikes!

Other Books to Try If You Liked Confessions of a Shopaholic

finlay donovan is killing it book

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
I received tons of recommendations for this book before I read it! It’s about a suburban mom who, while going through a messy divorce, is mistaken for a contract assassin. She’s not going to kill someone . . . . but the money would really help get her manipulative ex-husband off her back. Laugh-out-loud funny and a little zany! And I blew through the sequel, which was just as delightful!

The Shippers by Katherine Center
This is Katherine Center’s newest book. It definitely has Sophie Kinsella vibes (perfect if you loved Shopaholic!). It’s absurd, funny and there is a ton of good banter. I loved it!

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin
I’ve read pretty much every one of Emily Giffin’s books, but I still think her first one, Something Borrowed, is her best, about Rachel who has always played second string to her very vivacious and gorgeous best friend, Darcy. Until on her thirtieth birthday, Rachel confesses to Darcy’s fiance that she’s always had feelings for him and it turns out it’s not one-sided. With the wedding day getting closer, Rachel has to decide whether she’s going to let the wedding go through or take a stand for what she wants for the first time in her life.

The Little Lady Agency by Hester Browne
My mom sent me these books a decade ago after she read them and I blazed through them in a couple of days about a woman who starts a little dating business which, of course, couldn’t POSSIBLY get complicated. This is one of those perfect beach read romances, for sure!

the cheat sheet

The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams
Bree is in love with her best friend, who just happens to the very attractive NFL legend, Nathan Donelson. He clearly only sees her as a friend, but after a drunken night and an interview with a TMZ reporter they might turn out to be the perfect couple after all.

the bodyguard book

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
Hannah looks like a mild-mannered kindergarten teacher, but she is actually a private bodyguard who could probably kill you with your wristwatch. Her firm gets hired by Jack Stapleton, who is a massive movie star, and dealing with a stalker problem. He needs some protection while he goes home to visit his mom undergoing cancer treatments and Hannah gets put on the job. The lines get a little blurred when Jack wants her to pretend to be his girlfriend to keep his parents from worrying about him. What could possibly go wrong in this situation!?

The Good Part

The Good Part by Sophie Cousens
This one reminds me a bit of What Alice Forgot, where the main character wakes up to find herself 16 years in the future, no longer an under-employed 20 something living with multiple roommates in a very dodgy flat but instead married with two lovely children, a gorgeous house and a very legitimate career.

The Happy life of Isadora Bentley

The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley by Courtney Walsh
I listened to this story about a reclusive university researcher who has given up on love (and basically all relationships) on my runs last summer and it was a nice distraction from the miles I was pounding out. The heroine is Isadora who finds a magazine article with 31 ways to be happy and decides she’s going to prove the author wrong – she’ll do all 31 things and there is no way she’ll be happier at the end. Right? This is a squeaky-clean love story with a STEM storyline and it’s a fun, fluffy delight.

The Switch by Beth O’Leary
I really loved her book The Flatshare, and this one did not disappoint. When burned-out Leena and her eighty-year-old grandmother, Eileen, decide to swap homes for two months, they each get the fresh start they didn’t know they needed. This one is full of romance, family relationships, and charming village life.
