A Handful of Book Deals for an August Weekend

We’re two weeks into school now and homeschooling is going really well – I’ve been DELIGHTED at how smoothly it has gone so far!

Now we’re soaking up a few days off for the weekend while we still have nice weather, including a big hike and a picnic up the canyon.

Here are some of the book deals I’m most excited about!

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke – ebook
I read this book years ago after my younger brother had mentioned it to me while on vacation. For some reason, I expected it to be about dragons (hint: it’s not), but even without dragons this book is quite good. Meggie lives with her father, Mo, who is a book binder by trade and particularly skilled at bringing ancient and tattered books back to their former glory. After receiving a strange visitor and a whispered conversation, Mo and Meggie set out on an adventure. The second half of this book was especially gripping! (Full review here)

Pony by R. J. Palacio – ebook
From the extremely popular book, Wonder, comes the author’s new story about a boy whose father is kidnapped in the middle of the night. Silas make the courageous decision to take one of the robbers horses to journey across the country in search of his dad.

The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain by Annie M. Paul – audiobook
I can never say no to a book about the brain and how to improve it! This one is chalked full of great information about getting the most out of our cognitive abilities. It even includes techniques we can use to enhance our thought processes and problem solving skills.

The Woman They Could Not Silence: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear by Kate Moore – audiobook
Her audiobook Radium Girls has been recommended countless times, and I have been meaning to read it. But this one about Elizabeth Packard, a woman who was wrongfully committed to an insane asylum by her family in the early 1800s, sound just as intriguing!

Have I Told You This Already? Stories I Don’t Want to Forget to Remember by Lauren Graham – audiobook
I loved her memoir Talking as Fast as I Can, (huge Gilmore Girls fan back in the day) and this one is equally delightful. The audiobook is for sure the way to go since she reads it herself.

Save Me the Plums by Ruth Reichl – audiobook
If I had to pick a single favorite food book, it would probably be Garlic and Sapphires. But this memoir by the same author, about being editor at Gourmet until it shuttered, is also fantastic and snagged a spot on the Summer Reading Guide a few years ago.
