This Goes to Eleven

Shirt: Loft, Skirt: Downeast Basics
Shoes: Payless, Hairclip: Made by me

I was looking through my draft posts the other day and found this list of random things about me. I know you wanted to start your Monday morning with some random things about me.

1. I do not look good in button-down, collared shirts. I wish I did, but I do not.

2. I’m not particularly short (just shy of 5’4 which is smack dab what the national average for women is), but I was so short for such a long time (4’10 when I started high school) that it makes me really uncomfortable to stand next to someone shorter than I am.

3. I cannot stand under-baked bread products. It makes me gag to eat bread or rolls or cinnamon rolls that are at all doughy. Frankly, I can hardly even type this without feeling a little bit ill.

4. It is virtually impossible for me to watch anything without subtitles, unless I’m at the movie theater. And even then, I feel like I’m missing half the lines.

5. My least favorite part of my morning routine is putting on mascara. I don’t know why I find it so tedious, but I strongly dislike doing it.

6. My breakfast of the moment is plain yogurt, homemade granola, diced bananas, chopped cashews, and dried cranberries. It is ridiculously tasty.

7. I only wash my hair about once a week. When we lived in Boston, I washed it every other day and then I started pushing it off a little more when we moved to Texas and now I’m down to once every five or six days. This gives me so much more happiness than it should.

8. I have no sense of right or left. I’m 27, and I still have to consciously think about it every single time. I wish this was an April Fool’s joke, but it is most definitely not.

9. I won’t be the least bit sad if I only have daughters.

10. My favorite childhood television show was Sabrina the Teenage
Witch, which also happens to be pretty much the ONLY TV show I watched
as a child.

11. One of my biggest fears is getting in trouble, because I am the most pathetic person alive.

12.
It’s like torture when people ask me who my favorite author is. But,
it’s clearly Gary D. Schmidt. If there are still some of you out there
who haven’t read The Wednesday Wars, I’m obviously not doing my job.

  1. Thank you for acknowledging 5'4" is NOT short. It kind of really annoys me when people say I am.

Yay for lack of hair washing!

It's possible we rented a bunch of Sabrina DVDs on Netflix recently. I love cheesy old sitcoms. Too bad they no longer exist.

Love girls, but love boys, too. Doesn't sound like you'd be actively opposed to it, which is good because they are just the sweetest, especially to their moms.

  2. I watch with subtitles whenever I can, too.

And I also have an extremely difficult time with right and left. Thank goodness I wear a wedding ring or I'd be sunk.

  3. I totally agree with #3. Undercooked dough is disgusting. It's probably why I have trouble making homemade rolls – I'm just always afraid they'll turn out doughy. However, I made some yesterday for Easter and they turned out quite well. Yay for me!

  4. Sabrina was my favorite, too! I tried to watch it again recently one day when I was sick, and it was dumber than I remember. Haha.

  5. Sabrina was a funny show, definitely the best part of the "TGIF / Thank Goodness it's Friday" line up. And I'm like y=you on the daughters thing, I already have one with another daughter on the way and the thought of only having girls is not a sad one.

  6. I was pretty proud of myself for only washing my hair about every 3 days. You put me to shame.

I wish that Eric could get on the subtitles bandwagon. I can never understand anything in movies. You'd think Eric would get fed up with me saying, "What did they just say?" over and over again and relent. It hasn't happened yet.

  7. I love love love that skirt.

I cannot stand getting in trouble. Mascara really is a huge pain. It's a little bit better now that my eyelashes are longer (thank you, Lilash) but I still don't love it. And I'm impressed at your hairwashing cycle! I got to that point but then my head got super itchy and I couldn't stand it anymore and now I'm at every 3-4 days again. Boo.

  8. I'm endlessly fascinated with people who go more than 2 days without washing their hair…because I want to! I can go 2 or 3 days unless I run. I sweat a lot (gross), so I just never feel like I can go without washing my hair if I've been running. Is this true for other non-daily hair washers? Any suggestions? Insights? Experience?

  9. When I finally read the Wednesday Wars last year, it was immediately my favorite book. I went back to the bookstore and bought 4 more copies, just to give to someone…cause everyone needs to read that book. Boo on the new cover though (luckily, the copies I purchased were the old cover). So you are doing your job.

  10. Ok, I'm SO GLAD I'm not the only adult with no sense of right or left. I always have to think, "I write with my right hand, so this is right" and giving people directions is practically torture for me.

and I LOVE subtitles but my husband hates it. If I'm watching something alone, I always turn them on, but if my husband is there he makes me turn them off because it distracts him. I feel like I always miss stuff when they're off! 🙁

I don't know how anyone can not look good in collared button up shirts! Sometimes they look odd on super busty gals, but I don't think that applies to you 😉 Weird.

  11. #11 is me too! I still tear up and turn all red if I feel like I'm in trouble. Basically I'm in 3rd grade. Oh, and I'm totally envious of your hair. The longest I can go is two days, tops, or it's a greasy mess.

  12. Mascara is definitely the worst part of putting on makeup. If my hair is straight, I'm a once-a-week washer as well. If it's curly, I have to do twice a week because the curls get all funky. And I used to be that way about subtitles until Spencer broke me of the habit and now I HATE subtitles. Unless I'm watching a BBC show. Then they are necessary to understand what the people are saying.

  13. I was going to try to name off my favorite from your list, but decided I just can't. Because I love them all. I'm also jealous, like another commenter, of number 7, I too am loving yogurt parfaits (made with vanilla greek yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, and granola) at the yogurt, and I swear I've seen pics of you in button-downs and think you look fab in anything! 🙂

I am also about 5'9 1/2, and it still surprises me when I stand next to a woman that is taller than me. There are plenty out there, but I love when others wear heels. Yay! Then I don't feel like such a giraffe. 🙂

  14. I also have trouble with right and left and am a rigid rule-follower (even about stupid little things) due to my fear of getting in trouble.

Last night I had a dream that I saw you and one of your sisters in the grocery store but I pretended not to see you. And then I felt bad. So sorry for not saying hi to you in my dream. The most varied and random people tend to show up in my dreams so don't be creeped out.

  15. I wish I could go that long without washing my hair! It is so fine and thin, I can make it about 3 days (well, 2 days after the day I wash if that's the same thing)…and that's only since I started washing my hair with baking soda. Yes, I am a hippie. My hair is better than it's ever been since I started doing that.

  16. I always do my mascara last because it's the most annoying thing everrrr! Especially if you get it in your eye or on your eyelid. I have problems! xoxo

  17. #3, #7, #11 – I agree. I quit wearing mascara. Not because it annoys me to put it on, but because it always rubs on my glasses or flakes into my eyes – even the brands that used to work well. 5'4" isn't short, especially to those of us who are barely 5'1" or less. As to subtitles, I've come to rely on them. My hearing isn't what it used to be. As to button-down shirts not looking good, it may be because they just don't fit quite right?

  18. ummm. i still have to think about right and left every time, too. let's just say its a genius thing. we have to be geniuses. i'm sure that's it. you heard our high school government debates! we rocked. geniuses.

  19. I REALLY wish I could go that long without washing my hair, but it gets smashed to my head and dry and oily at the same time just a day after I wash it. Also, I was totally obsessed with "Sabrina," too! It's fantastic.

  20. Numbers 4, 5, and 7 make me hope that we can meet when I come to Austin this fall. I didn't know there were other people like me who think every movie and TV show should have subtitles. I was thrilled when Netflix lost a lawsuit with the hearing impaired and had to provide them on everything.

  21. This list is awesome. I'm only 5'1". Please don't feel silly standing next to me 🙂
I also hate mascara, but feel like it's the most important make up I put on.
And seriously – I can't believe you wash your hair that little!! I am an EVERY day without fail person. I feel so gross if I don't. I wish I wasn't so greasy.
