Sisters Share It All: Christmas Traditions

Today, I’m thinking about one of my favorite Christmas traditions from my childhood.

Like most children, we all got pretty antsy on Christmas Eve – that day seemed to draaaaaaag when we were little. My parents hit upon a great idea: every year, we’d go to see a movie on Christmas Eve.

We didn’t see a ton of movies in the theater when I was a child, so this was a pretty big deal. I remember seeing Miracle of 34th Street, 101 Dalmations, Elf, and many more over the course of my childhood. Some were great movies, some were . . .not great movies, but it was always a delightful outing as a family.

It’s been fun to continue this into adulthood, going to see a movie with our spouses and my parents when we go to their home for Christmas.

Bart and I contemplated doing it this year (we were planning to see The Hobbit), but Ella is still too young to sit through a full-length movie (when we watched The Grinch for one of our advent activities, we had to watch most of it on fast-forward because she couldn’t manage even a 26 minute movie), and the idea of spending about four hours away from our child on Christmas Eve didn’t seem particularly festive.

Next year, perhaps, we’ll be ready to start going with Ella (Ani, I’m sure, will get to spend time with a babysitter).
