4 Books I’m Currently Reading (+ My Team’s Picks!)

I won’t lie – September has NOT been my best month for reading!

I’ve been keeping up pretty well on my reading goal for this year but Goodreads tells me I’m currently 5 books behind, so I’ll have to step it up a bit to hit my goal by Dec 31st!

Here’s what I’ve been reading lately!

Code Name Kingfisher by Liz Kessler
This was on my list of books to read this past summer and I didn’t get to it because I was reading aloud the entire Little House series to my girls. We finally wrapped that up and jumped right into this WWII historical fiction title and we were all instantly into it! I knew it was a hit when, the first night, even my 8 year old who usually takes a few days to warm up to a new book wanted to keep reading!

If Looks Could Kill by Julie Berry
Her book, Lovely War, is one of my all-time favorite books (and my 12 and 15 year olds read it this year and loved it too!). So of course I immediately picked up her new release which is a historical fiction book with Jack the Ripper and Medusa (yes, the Medusa of the myths!) coming face to face. It is a strange book but I’m also very into it.

Love Off-Limits by Jenny Proctor
I blew through her “How to Kiss A . . . ” series (you can see my 30 second review of it here!) and those books all follow one of the four Hawthorne brothers. This book from a different series crosses over because it is about their sister. I just can’t get enough of this clean romance author – her books have been a delight to me this fall!

Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes
In preparation for our Boston trip for fall break, we’ve been listening to this as a family, including on our road trip to Aspen for my birthday, and it’s fun to revisit this book from my childhood. It’s a perfect review of the things we’re learning about in history before our trip!

And here’s what my team is reading!

Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions of Adulthood by Lisa Damour Ph.D.
My sister recommended this book to me after she had already read it and since my daughter turned 13 this month, I figured now would be a perfect time to read it. It’s chock full of real life examples, great ideas on how to connect with your daughters, and some fabulous insight on why they are the way they are and how to respond to them. Plus the focus is on how amazing teenagers really are, which I’m all about. I bought a copy to reference since we are just on the cusp of teenage-hood and there is definitely information on stages we have yet to reach.

I Just Wish I Had a Bigger Kitchen: And Other Lies I Think Will Make Me Happy by Kate Strickler
I’ve been following Kate Strickler of Naptime Kitchen for years and this part-memoir, part-self-help book blends her signature humor, honesty, and heart. With relatable stories and practical mindset shifts, she shares ideas on how to find joy in everyday life – even in a world where social media makes comparison so tempting. It was such an uplifting, down-to-earth read that felt like catching up with a wise (and funny) friend.

The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion Vol. 8 by Beth Brower
I’m on the final (as of now) volume of the Emma M. Lion series and it truly just gets better and better. I am fully invested in the misadventures of Miss Lion, Pierce, Islington and Hawkes. I really hope book number nine is published soon!

  1. I’m reading If Looks Could Kill, too! Julie Berry had a signing at our local bookstore, Parnassus, about 2 weeks ago, and she is brilliant. Hearing her talk about her writing process and where she gets her ideas makes me want to read everything she’s ever written!
