Breakfast Reading
I know a lot about nutrition labels.
This is mainly because, as a kid, I spent many many mornings reading the cereal boxes over breakfast and asking my dad what sodium was (you’re shocked to hear that I was something of a nerdy kid).
As an adult, my breakfast reading material has gotten a little more interesting (more interesting than calcium content? It blows my mind too).
Now my go-to is a stack of magazines. They’re easy to read a little bit at a time, and I get a lot more enjoyment out of it than just scrolling through Facebook in the morning.
Unlike books, which I’m usually happy to check out from the library, I much prefer to have my own subscription because the library doesn’t let you check out the newest issue and I don’t particularly enjoy reading about Valentine’s ideas in April, but maybe that’s just me.
Also, there is just something really delightful about getting something in the mail each month.
Of course, I never want to pay full-price for a subscription, and DiscountMags.com has some of the best deals I’ve seen. I worked with them to put together a collection of some of my favorite magazines, and they’re all majorly discounted. A year of Family Fun for less than $5? Yes please.
And I love magazines for children too (plus, after we checked out a magazine for Ani at the library and she cut out all the game pieces and I paid $5 to replace that single issue, I figured we might as well just subscribe so they could actually do the puzzles, games, and activities in each issue).
I have really happy memories of the various magazine subscriptions my family had over the years as I was growing up. Twenty-five years later, and I still remember the year my grandmother gave us a subscription to Ladybug, which has remained one of my favorite children’s magazines of all time (they also have a younger version called Babybug and a slightly older version called Cricket).
For Ella’s birthday last summer, we got her a magazine subscription and she asks at least twice a week, “Do you think my magazine will have come today?” It was her favorite gift this year – even more so than her Frozen bike.
And if we’re going on a trip, I’ll hide the newest issue of our children’s subscriptions because they keep my girls entertained for so long in the car or on the airplane and I like having them ready to pull out when everyone starts to get bored. Or I’ll store the old ones and then bring them back out after many months and they seem new and exciting again.
And if you’re looking for a Valentine’s gift and you’ve postponed ordering something for too long now (which obviously I would never do except for every single holiday and birthday), a magazine subscription is the perfect solution. It’s super easy to gift a magazine through DiscountMags.com and send a little personalized note along too.
It took me all of 90 seconds to order my girls a subscription to Zoobooks for Valentine’s Day. I’m pretty sure it won’t even rot their teeth, like their other Valentine’s Day presents. If you’re also in the market for a gift that isn’t going to give anyone cavities, check out the Valentine’s Day sale here.
We loved getting magazines as kids! We were obviously the cliche family that had highlights for 10 straight years. Derek got me a subscription to Parents when I was first pregnant with Kyle and now we get Family Circle and Allyou too. Which I don't actually remember ever ordering but they keep showing up, so why not?
you're a genius. <3
I wish I could peacefully read through a magazine at breakfast! My kids would never let me be. But I've always loved a good magazine.
Totally off subject, what car do you drive to haul around your 3? We are getting ready to buy, and I am finding out all of the good options out there, asking everyone!
I really love magazines too! I read them when I eat breakfast or lunch, and I don't really worry about spilling on them like I would if it was a book. My kids love getting them in the mail too. You can sign up at Lego.com and get a free Lego magazine that comes out every other month or so.
I loved getting Babybug when we had toddlers. The poems and stories were a delight, and it is published on paper that they couldn't tear! (They could eventually suck on them to pulp, but that took a while.)
I subscribe to InStyle and Readers Digest and getting them in the mail makes me so happy.
This is really random, but I'm always looking for tees with sleeves like that. Where did you get yours?
I bought it at LOFT last summer!
