11 April Weekend Book Deals

the self driven childThe Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives by William Stixrud and Ned Johnson
WHOA. This book was so good – probably the best parenting book I’ve read. I loved discussing this in the 2020 Everyday Reading Book Club and it was so helpful to me as a parent. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Also, if you missed the Zoom call I had with the authors where I did a Q&A, you can catch that here! (Full review here)

today tonight tomorrowToday Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon
I read this sweet, charming and funny YA romance a few years ago. In this rivals to lovers novel, Rowen and Neil are both overachievers who have been bitterly battling each other to be the “best” at everything in the school. It’s only a matter of time though until these two start falling for each other.

Dreamland by Sarah Dessen
There are the older Sarah Dessen books and the newer Sarah Dessen books and this one falls squarely into the older Sarah Dessen category which are heavier and darker than her newer stuff. I still think about this one almost 15 years later!

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande
This book focuses on the idea that today medicine has huge abilities to fight against disease, but eventually everyone is going to die and how, from a medical and from a personal perspective, the best way to face that reality is. I know that sounds so dull and also depressing, but it’s really anything but. I couldn’t get enough and I secretly think EVERYONE should read this book. (Full review here)

Save Me the Plums: My Gourmet Memoir by Ruth Reichl
If I had to pick a single favorite food book, it would probably be Garlic and Sapphires. But this memoir by the same author, about being editor at Gourmet until it shuttered, is also fantastic and snagged a spot on the Summer Reading Guide a few years ago.

The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People’s Lives Better, Too) by Gretchen Rubin
You know how I love Gretchen Rubin and this book all about four types of personality is really fun and fascinating.

thank you for listeningThank You For Listening by Julia Whelan
I LOVE Julia Whelan’s audiobook narration (she narrates Book Lovers!) and her book that she wrote (and narrated!) was an instant best seller. This book is especially fun because it’s all about the world of audiobook narrating. The main character, Sewanee, used to be an actress, but now she has moved into audiobook narration. She got her start in romance novels which she’s decided to leave that behind her, but she gets roped into doing one last romance project. This final project ends up being with the most popular male audiobook narrator of the romance genre, Brock McKnight. You will definitely want to listen to this one on audio! Heads up for one brief open door scene.

the star that always stays bookThe Star That Always Stays by Anna Rose Johnson
I read this one aloud to my girls last year and we all loved this book with a classic feel to it. Norvia loves her Ojibwe heritage, but when her family moves to the city in 1914, her mother wants her to pretend she’s not Native, including to her new stepfather and stepbrother. And as if that isn’t enough, a world on the verge of world war gives her plenty of other things to worry about. (This one is a Libro.fm title, which means you can make it into a Yoto card!).

the one and only bobThe One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate
Even though I don’t normally like books about animals, I thought The One and Only Ivan was really fantastic! This sequel stars Ivan’s good friend Bob, the dog. (This one is also a Libro.fm title, which means you can make it into a Yoto card!).

insignificant events in the life cactus bookInsignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling
My four girls have listened to this one on repeat. Moving is never fun, but it’s especially unpleasant for Aven who was born without arms. A new town and school means she’ll have to explain herself repeatedly to a bunch of strangers. But in her new town, she make friends with Conner, who also feels like an outsider in their school. And together, they embark on solving a mystery at the dilapidated theme park her parents are running. (This one is also a Libro.fm title, which means you can make it into a Yoto card!).

Knight’s Castle (Tales of Magic Book 2) by Edward Eager
Right now I am reading The Time Garden (Book 4) to my girls. I rarely read a whole series to my kids, but it’s feeling so fun to just deep dive into Edward Eager’s books – they were my favorites as a kid and now, revisiting them decades later, is like reuniting with beloved friends. Knight’s Castle is book 2 in the series, but there is crossover between the books, so you can basically read them in any order since they all stand alone. Magic by the Lake (Book 3) is also on sale for $2.99.
