No Regrets
Sometimes, we leave Utah, and Bart and I wonder if it is a mistake to raise our baby so far away from her grandparents, her cousins, her aunts and uncles. We imagine a life where we didn’t spend $700 multiple times a year to fly west for family events. Bart talks about how much he misses the mountains.
And then sometimes it snows in Utah in the first week of October, while I take Ella to the park in shorts and sandals.
And Texas seems like just the right place to be.
Amen.
Or New York in my case.
North Meets South
Weather aside, there are a lot of good ways to have a family. Distance never did mine any harm, although my mother-in-law is distraught at the thought of her "baby" moving away because his wife encouraged him to go to school in the UK. My own parents response to his decision was more along the lines of, "COOL!"
Enjoy the warmer weather for me, though, I had banked on a few more weeks of Autumn!
Yeah, when I heard of snow in Utah this week…yuck. I'll be loving the fall weather here with the fantastic sunshine.
Hey, it's in the 80s here this week! (Well, earlier this week.) Of course, the wind is ripping the siding off houses today, so the park is kinda out.
Amen, and amen. That is all.
Yeah, go ahead, rub it in, y'all. I'll just sit here pouting all wrapped up in my blanket.
I wouldn't be so resentful if it wasn't EIGHTY-FIVE DEGREES last week! What happened to fall?!
*sigh*
That's funny, because my reaction to the snow this week was "Aw, weather! I will never, ever get to wear a cute coat as long as I live in South Texas. I miss you cute coats! I miss you, reason to drink hot chocolate! I miss you, fall leaves!" Seriously. My friend and I were mourning the fact that we weren't in the slush storm this week, and it was absurd. I'm sure we'd feel differently about it if we were there, but I'm going to be so much more appreciative of changing seasons when I get out of here.
Love your perspective.
right!?! Sometimes we make good choices.

I feel for Bart. One can get as homesick for the mountains as one can for people. (This I know from experience.) But, you live where there is a job. Maybe at some point you can find the mountains and warm weather. You have other family near. Enjoy them. 🙂
I'm not in Utah, but yes, it snowed down to about 3800 feet. Many cars had as much as 4" of snow on them. Oh, and it is very wet and chilly. So enjoy the warm weather.
If I had all that family support and love, I'd surround myself around it. I think you're as crazy as the Mabeys for not living near all that family network and support.
That aside, I loathe snow.
I feel that way sometimes too moving to Virginia. But then I remember the leaves change here for 2 months and I'm not so sad. 🙂
Yeah. The weather this week is kinda' making me regret we moved to Utah from Southern California …
I started reading this and thought, "Is Janssen in Utah? No way! I'm in Utah! Let's get together, hey, hey, hey." But then it turned out that you are in Texas. Just living it up in your shorts while I scramble to find some long-sleeve shirts to put on my boys. I never expected it to snow while I was here. Good times.
Enjoy that warm weather, us Utah folks are FREEZING! 🙁
Yep. I'm still looking for a place to call home. It is unlikely to be near my family, but at this stage in my life, with no husband and no kids and neither thing on my radar, now feels like the right time to pick up and go.
It snowed at my house this week. Dang. I was going to make a smiley face that was sticking out its tongue at you, but I can't figure it out. Guess you'll have to use your imagination.
I have similar feeling where we live. It's hard being far away from family, but we love where we live too!
Having had it both ways…there are definite benefits and drawbacks to each. When living in Texas it was so fun to have Grandparents come and stay a week. To get them for breakfast and lunch, every moment of the day. Here we see them more often, but never overnight or for breakfast.
We definitely get more quantity time but it is not as much quality. It was so nice to be here for the passing of several of our grandparents and close family members. Times when we might not have made it back from Texas.
Yep, both ways are good, both ways have bad.
But no matter how you slice it snow sucks (except for like…three days a year, one for Christmas, one for sledding and one for skiing. Then I'm done.)
I could have written this post myself. Except for the "wearing shorts at the park" I would say something like "riding the bus to the city"….
