All the World’s a Stage
I’m in Vegas again for the week and on Wednesday, my mom and I drove up to Cedar City, UT for the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
If you’ve never been, or never even heard of it, you are missing out. We’ve gone nearly every year for the past 15 years and loved every single play we’ve seen (and we’ve probably seen 20+ shows there). Each year they do three Shakespeare plays, a musical, and two other plays. In the fall, they do one Shakespeare and two other shows.
Cedar City is about a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas, and we made it in time to have dinner at our favorite little restaurant there, called The Garden House. We used to go every time we went, but it closed down a few years ago and only last year did we discover it had reopened with a new name. Oh, it is terrific.
On Wednesday night, we saw As You Like It, which neither of us had ever seen and which was very charming. The first half was in the inside theater, since it was pouring rain, but at intermission they moved us outdoors to the Globe Theater despite the fact it was still sprinkling pretty hard (I’ve never been so glad for cheap seats at the back that were right under the balcony and thus protected from the rain).
We spent the night at a gorgeous little bed and breakfast called The Big Yellow Inn, run by, possibly, the nicest couple in the world. We had a delightful time. And then, yesterday, we saw Foxfire, a show neither of us had ever heard of, but was in the right time slot and, since we’d never seen a dud, we figured we’d take a risk on. And it was terrific. I loved every second of it. The story was interesting, the acting was amazing, and the set was really cool. I would go see it again in a heartbeat.
Sadly, we weren’t able to see Henry V, starring our all time favorite Utah Shakespeare actor, Brian Vaughn. I’m attempting not to start scheming ways for Bart and I to fly back just to see it.
Now we’re back in Vegas, and I have one last day of fun and frivolity with my parents before it’s back to Austin to pack up our entire house for our close date next week. Somehow, Vegas seems more fun.
Oooo, you lucky people!
My sister-in-law lives in Cedar City and has never invited us down for the Festival. I'll have to get on her about that… Joking, of course. 🙂
Packing! You move soon then, have you found a new place in Boston yet?
I love stopping in Cedar when we're on our way to the Salt Lake area. My family and I used to eat at a place called Adrianna's or something like that, and I have no idea if it's still there. I just remember the food being good, especially the rolls and jam. I've also always wanted to go to the Shakespearean festival, but I just have yet to go.
Wanted to let you know that I just read Cheaper by the Dozen for the first time and I loved it! The library's closed today but I'm hoping to get Belles on Their Toes when I go next week. Such an amazing family.
We should do thing some time! We just went to see "7 Brides for 7 Brothers" by a community theatre group in Vernal (outside performance) that was really fun. Guess they do something every year and we just discovered it!
I love that festival!! I went with my grandparents as a young child for the first time (because my relative is the one who actually founded the festival!! sadly, that doesn't get me discounted seats) and loved every minute of it! I'm jealous you have gone so many times! I've only been lucky enough to have seen a handful of productions there!
Ohh, I love Shakespeare Festivals! 🙂
Isn't the the Garden House where Adriana's used to be?? I worked at Adriana's while I lived in Cedar City….until they closed. Did they reopen or something? Glad you had a great time!
Ooo, this sounds lovely! Sorry you didn't get to see that one show, though.
We love the festival too! We had a chance to go when Claire was just a baby. I'm glad you enjoyed!
We were in Vegas at the same time! I'm trying to get down to the Shakespeare festival as well, I've seen so many plays there over the years but my favorite was The Merry Wives of Windsor. Hilarious!
I am in love with Henry V…and also Brian Vaughn. I worked with him last year at the festival (I was a coach for a high school shakes team) and I just think he is fantastic.
I'm so glad you went! And enjoyed it!!
xox
DH and I are trying to get down there next month! This would be my first time. He's been several times, the nut. Glad to hear it was lovely.
You MUST come to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It's in pretty much the cutest town EVER.
(Hi, can you tell I work for the Oregon Tourism Commission? I'm always working!)
Sounds wonderful! I haven't been there for years. It's time I made that a tradition.
