Frankly, this kind of book list stresses me out to make because everyone has such different filters that they’re listening through that something I’m fine having my kids hear is a hard no for you.

(When I asked for suggestions for this book list, there were SO MANY book recommendations that I was like . . . . The Frozen River, for instance, was EXCELLENT, but when I think about books I would listen to around young children? This one ain’t it. If you’ve read it, you know).

I’ve believed this for a long time, but it has been top of mind for me the past few weeks as my 11 year old blows through the whole ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL books.

They’re not necessarily even intended to be kid books and they are long!

I can’t imagine that she would have picked them up if we hadn’t been watching the (extremely excellent) PBS show of All Creature Great and Small over the past few years.

But because we HAVE watched them, she knew the characters, the setting, and the storyline well enough to feel confident diving in.

She’s loved pointing out where the show and the books diverge or where the book gives more details about various characters and plots.

When I told my mom about this last week, she mentioned that she read Pride & Prejudice in high school and couldn’t keep the five sisters straight at all and found the whole thing hard to follow. Years later, she watched the Colin Firth movie version and then went back and read the book and loved it, now that she knew who every character was and could follow the storyline.
