I read HEARTWOOD HOTEL aloud to my second daughter when she was in kindergarten and it was the most delightful, sweet chapter book.

For some kids, reading just doesn’t come easily

For some kids, reading just doesn’t come easily and it can quickly turn into a power struggle where everything around books and reading starts to feel deeply negative.

Few people learn to love reading because they’re forced or bribed into it - most people love reading because of hundreds or thousands of positive experiences with it and if you have a child who hates reading, I’d highly recommend you focus on creating as many positive experiences as possible with reading.

Listen to an audiobook together in the car on the way to school, let them stay up later to read, watch a movie version of a book and then read the book, try a different format (like graphic novels) or genre (like non-fiction or fantasy). Read aloud to them and let them color or play with LEGOs while you do. Visit the library. Let them pick out a book at the bookstore. Allow them to quit books that aren’t working for them. Have special snacks during reading time. Try interactive books like I Spy books. Don’t make them feel bad about their reading tastes.
