The Best Father’s Day Dinner

June 10, 2013

We have a dilemma in our family on holidays like Mother’s Day. I don’t particularly want to cook myself a gigantic feast on Mother’s Day.

Bart, perhaps even more so, does not want to cook a gigantic feast (he can cook, but he does not like to. In fact, a few weeks ago when we were having pancakes for dinner, he was flipping them and Ella said to me in the most astonished voice, “Did you ever know that Daddy knew how to cook?”).

Frankly, I don’t want him to cook dinner for me either, because having him spend hours in the kitchen while I entertain the children on my own is not my idea of a great time either. Also, we have a pretty nice dinner most nights of the week. And if I really want something for dinner, I can make it any night I want.

Then, this year, Bart hit on the world’s best idea ever.

He said, “What if we start a new tradition for Mother’s and Father’s Day? Why don’t we go to the grocery store and you can pick out all the foods you like most and never buy for yourself, and we’ll just have a big spread of delicious foods for dinner?”

I was instantly the biggest fan ever of this idea.

Not only do I love no-prep food, I love traditions. I especially love traditions that don’t require a lot of effort to maintain.

We bought dried mangos, a big loaf of french bread, some ridiculously pricy cheese with dried cranberries in it, spinach dip and Ritz crackers, salami from the deli counter, fruit snacks (yes, I am five) and Simply Limeade. We picked out three different containers of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (Cinnamon Buns is, possibly, my favorite ice cream of all time). I resisted the urge to get PopTarts too, but now I’m wondering why. I should have bought them (but then I would have had to make the killer decision of which of my favorite flavors to get – cinnamon & brown sugar, s’mores, or frosted strawberry).

It took all of five minutes to get dinner ready, and it was one of my favorite meals of my life.

Ella was also an enormous fan. Since then, she’s been asking on an almost daily basis, “Are you so excited to see what Daddy picks for his Father’s Day dinner?”

Actually I am. I hope he picks some PopTarts.

This sounds excellent! I did a crock pot meal for Mother's Day so I would have a good meal I didn't have to do much for (my husband doesn't cook). I'm thinking about doing something similar for Father's Day bc we are probably going to a baseball game so it will be nice to come home to dinner afterward.

Where was this idea 35 years ago?? Now if I can just convince Dave to get on board with this….you know what they say about old dogs. It's kinda true sometimes.

This is brilliant! And I'm also shocked that you didn't choose poptarts…

That is an excellent idea! Now why didn't you tell me before Mother's Day?! Also, you should have chosen poptarts and made a poptart ice cream sandwich.

wow, this is such a great idea! i'm ridiculously frugal so we never have "fun" prepackaged foods in our house but mother's day/father's day would be the perfect excuse to treat ourselves! thanks for sharing!

I may steal this idea! And YES! Cinnamon Buns ice cream is amazing. As is the Chubby Hubby flavor. And now I really, really want some Simply Limeade!

So, I hate cooking and this idea is absolutely fantastic. I'm a huge pop tart fan, too — the brown sugar ones are the BEST.

I love this idea 🙂 Peanut Butter Cup is my favorite Ben & Jerry's, but Cinnamon Bun is a close second!

This is such a cute and simple idea and probably still less expensive than going out for dinner.
