Apparently, I can’t stop talking about movies.
So, we’d decided to go see a movie this weekend. There were several things we were considering seeing (why do ALL the good movies come at once and then there is nothing to see for weeks on end?), but we finally settled upon “Stardust.” I wasn’t that interested in seeing it, frankly – the preview seemed too complex and weird for me (you can see the preview here), but Bart had been dying to see it and since it had already been there for a few weeks, it seemed like time might be running out. So we went.
In case you don’t know the basic gist of the movie, here it is: Tristin is in love with Victoria. She thinks he’s a nice boy, but she’s more interested in another guy. Tristin takes her out to a field one night, where they drink champagne and watch the stars. When they see a shooting star, he promises to go and get it for her and, if he doesn’t, she’ll marry the other guy. The star, though, has fallen on the other side of THE WALL, which divides the regular world from the magical kingdom of Stormhold. Tristin manages to get himself across the wall and locates the place the star fell. The star, though, is actually a girl named Yvaine. Tristin convinces her to come with him so he can show her to Victoria.
Unbenownst to them both, though, there are others after Yvaine. There are three witches who, in order to stay young and lovely, have to eat the heart of a star. Their last star has run out decades before, so they are anxious to get their hands of Yvaine. And also? The king of Stormhold has just died and whichever of his sons can kill the other six brothers and get the ruby that Yvaine wears around her neck will be the next king. So, it’s a bit risky out there for Yvaine and Tristin.
People, this movie is fabulous. It is so funny, but also very sweet. And the story really holds together very well. Did I mention this movie is funny? There are a hundred really hilarious things in it – my favorite being that the ghosts of the dead princes hang around until the new king is chosen, in the states that they died in (one of the princes has been pushed out of a high tower, so his face is completely squished on one side, with his lips flattened in). They follow the remaining princes around making snide comments and offering hints about what to do next.
Many reviewers have compared it to “The Princess Bride” and it really does have much the same feel to it (although, to be honest, I liked “Stardust” better, possibly just because it was new and not a movie I’ve seen dozens of times already). It also reminded me a little of “Ever After.”
So yes, you should probably see this movie. I really think it’s one of the five best movies I’ve seen this year. I can’t wait to see it again.

And seriously, it only gets better. That’s what I saw at the dollar last night…for the third time. Funnier and funnier. And it’s sweet. They do a great job with the romance! And I feel like they do a better job with the comedy than P.B. I cannot say enough about how much I like this movie!

I have been looking for a movie to watch in the theaters (and not just wait for it to come out on video.) I will take your recommendation and chloe elizabeth’s. “Ever After” is on my Top Ten and I loved P.B. as well. Is this movie PG? Would be great if I can take my daughter with me.

We loved it too! Too bad we don’t live closer, b/c we LOVE Settlers & Ticket to Ride. I’ve never met anyone else who knows BOTH of those games. Have you gotten into Cities & Knights yet?

Oh good, I’m glad you ended up liking it, I was worried for a minute. I think this is the movie we’ll go see this week (as it has finally come to the dollar…) The last movie we went to was Harry Potter.

Yes, it was great. I thought it was even better than the book (minus the one scene with too many special effects and a bit of strong implausibility). The brothers are my favorite.
